    It's a can of worms.

Let's say you were old and poor, and you think your gas installation is dodgy. Maybe the boiler is no good, but you could still cook with gas, and boil some hot water for the bath. You get a free inspection, and the engineer disconnects you, so you can't even cook any more.

What they need is advisors who can get the money to fix their problem, not somebody who tells them they have a problem.

It's like a voluntary MOT for people who would rather run their tyres until the lining shows.

I beg to differ, I've just had one, though admittedly that was because I have had my heating installed in the last 6 months.

Look on the gas safe website and it's on there. It is a free safety check

This appears to refer to the Priority Services Register - a service offered by all of the 'Big 6'. Designed for pensioners and other vunerable consumers, it offers, amongst other things to make life easier, a free yearly gas safety check. It costs nothing to be put on the register - just call your supplier and ask.

"You could be entitled to a free gas safety check. Gas suppliers have a duty to provide free gas safety checks to some elderly people. Call the company you get your gas bills from to find out more. Their telephone number is usually on the bill you receive. A free gas safety check may apply to home owners on means tested benefits who:
    • are elderly, disabled or chronically sick and either live alone or with others who are elderly, disabled, chronically sick or under 18.
    • are living with others where at least one child is under 5 years old.
    • have not had a gas safety check carried out at the premises in the last 12 months.
    • do not occupy premises where a landlord is responsible for arranging a check under regulations made under the Health and Safety at Work Act.

Apparently there is £134 million going to waste because old folks are not taking up the free offer.

Gas Safe Register is urging people, particularly the elderly, to make sure they take advantage of free gas safety checks if they are eligible

All very well but once the free check is done, the person still has to pay for follow up/repairs...

Now in the days of the old Nationalised British Gas Corporation, i recall every Autumn they launched campaigns for free checks for vulnerable customers/old dears and full fire services for a fiver a go..bargain.

But then you consumers wanted choice...so now you have it.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

Commercialism has taken over the gas industry, there was a time when all pensioners had the 1st half hour of a callout free, and it was usually the Gas Fitter who was there an hour or so never booked anymore than the half hour.

Because we cared about people not money in those days???????

The hook is gas safety check then the grabbing begins, the hypocricy is that if a service is carried out all the gas safety checks can be done properly and it doesnt take any longer if done correctly????

I hope the person who stated the elderly get enough already works for a bank and dont need to rob one when he get old!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
