  • email : open the email, right click on the sender and you'll have to option to add it to your address book.

lost pics : do a search for a filename you know you've lost on c: just to see if it's really gone or a new profile has been created.
  • Thanks for the tip about the saving the email addresses.

I have tried to get music/pictures etc back, nothing at all can I see,I am not computer literate very confused?[self taught grey surfer]

Another way with the emails is to right click any email in your inbox and choose "Add sender to address book".

As regards the lost data, if you have access to another pc, I would suggest using that for accessing internet and search for programs that do data recovery. Probably the less you do on the machine with lost data the better as you then have more chance of recovery.

    Hiya,

you can also purchase software that allows you to recover lost pics , data, word files etc and its not really too expensive ,

may be worth a go if theres stuff on there that you need to recover that youve no copies of.

    HTH & Good luck

I think it depends how important the things you've lost are to you. A computer shop could cost a lot and still give no guarantee. If the stuff is really important it might be best to find a company who specialise in data recovery. You could tell them what happened and they might give a good idea of chance of success. But most likely expensive.

If you fancy trying yourself I found this one that has an evaluation (but only to find 2 files). You have to download it I think (which obviously could overwrite some of your lost data - maybe avoid this by downloading direct to a CD-R perhaps) but I think it has a search method that doesn't involve a full install.

If you manage to find a couple of files you may fancy purchasing and trying for the rest.

I emailed a local computer shop they said more or less what you said no guarantees.

I looked at that site you mentioned,it looks very complicated for an "oulde" sod like me.

I came across this company that may be worth contacting:

    http://www.fields-data-recovery.co.uk/welcome.htm

Could be expensive but at least on the face of it (haven't studied detail) it's No recovery,No fee.
Also an online price guide, and even free data recovery software apparently available.

As I said, could be way too expensive for you, just found this on the site:

"Currently, our average recovery fee for a standard hard drive requiring a typical logical recovery is £275 + VAT."

    you could try;

http://www.handyrecovery.com/index.shtml their free version is at: http://www.handyrecovery.com/handyrecovery-fw.exe

just click analyze and then the filter buttons at the top and xee what it finds
  • Another utility for recovering deleted files is Powerquest Lost & Found. I've used this in past with some success. Unfortunately it's now discontinued, however a demo version is available at http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,6769,00.asp
