Water bill!

Hi there!

I live in Wales and I have a water meter, and still I have to pay a lot. My last bill is £251 for 153 days (5 months).
I think it's a lot, especially coz I only live with my partner and most of the time I am away at uni.
I phoned the water company and they said I need to test my meter, which means I need to take reading, then don't use the water for 3-4 hours and take a reading again.
I've done this twice, as the first time the reading was exactly the same. The second time the last digit (in red colour) moved from 0 to 1. At that time no one was using the water. There was no one in the house too!
Now I am going to call them again and see what they say.
Does anyone has had any problems with their water meter?
Please advice....:(

I live in Cardiff and I think that your bill is definitely way too high.
How many units are you using in the six months (according to your bill)?
I would say that if it is more than 12 for water and 8 for sewage then there is a problem - and those amounts would still be very high considering your frequent absences
(sewage is estimated based on how much water you use - the lower the water used the more nearly equal the sewage becomes)

If the meter moves when no water is being drawn then you either have a leak downstream of the meter, or you are looking at the wrong meter. Does the S/N on the meter match that on the bill?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

You need to turn off the internal stop tap to do this test as tanks in the loft can slowly draw water for a while if the toilet has been flushed a few times.

Absolutely correct. Inform the Water company that you suspect a leak and would like them to check. They are duty-bound to do so.

On the topic of water companies: I have all my roof water (from the guttering down pipes) draining into water butts. The overflow drains, not into a sewer drain, but a "Soakaway", which means that it drains into the ground and is not therefore dealt with by the water company. This means that I get an annual rebate on my bill. If you can prove that your run-off water is drained in the same way, you can apply online for the rebate. And, no, it is not backdated, sorry!
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.
