When I got my first internet connection, in 2000, I was with freeserve, which then became wanadoo. Never had the slightest problems with them. Then Orange bought them and I did experience, over the last year, problems in connecting every few weeks, but nothing major. This seems to have been sorted out. The speed is 8mb, although the true speed depends on how much your computer can handle (so I understand).
I pay £16.99 per month for unlimited bb access.Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0 -

Kingmonkey - I have to say I don't know what capping and throttling means tho I am pretty sure I won't be webhosting!
According to BT my line is capable of 6mb which is good (apparently). Although I've used the net loads before (work, uni, etc) I've never had it at home as I've only just got a pc that it would be worth having it on. I've already got a wireless router (the OH wanted it) and we bought that along with the pc from an independent shop - the guy who delivered the pc said he would set up the wireless once the broadband is ready as it's not an easy task to get right.
Am I right in thinking as I've got the wireless thingie - i won't need a modem....?????? Also will having wireless make a difference to what provider I should go with.
Thanks! C xxxx
Capping or throttling means that some providers say you can download unlimited amounts but in truth once you've downloaded a certain amount each day, week or month will slow down (trottle) your connection maybe to a 10th or less of your normal access speed or some cut you off altogether (capping) until the next day, week or month. It usually falls under there 'fair usuage' policy which means with some internet providers means when they decide you are downloading too much they'll do one of the above. It especially effects music or video downloaders and online game playing.0 -
I'm with IDNet and would recommend them until the end of time! Here's why, whilst they may not be the cheapest company in the world, you get what you pay for. I'm subscribed to their top package, which gives me higher priority over other "normal" adsl traffic.
Not that you ever have to call them, but customer support is THE BEST! You can ring or email them and ask them anything, whether it be "I have a problem with my connection" or "can you recommend a good router". They treat you as a person, not an account number and you get to know the staff on a first name basis as they hang around adslguide and IDNetters.
Obviously, the type of connection you'll get with any company depends on a lot of factors i.e. distance from your exchange, line quality etc. But I think you should certainly check IDNet out, there is no better isp out there.0 -

Hi guys.
I think I'm going to go with Zen, I like the fact it's a monthly contract so if it turns out to be !!!!!! which I'm sure it won't then I can change it. And of course all your great recommendations!
Thanks again I knew I could count on MSE for help!

IDNet is a monthly contract too and you get 10gb more bandwidth a month on their mid and and top packages for the same price. In all honestly, there's not much to choose between Zen and IDNet. But at this point in time and baring in mind IDNet offer more bandwidth for the same price, they've got to be the preferred option!0 -
I'm with NewNet, they have a range of tariffs and provide me a good solid connection.0

well depends upon you location. I think you must take this advice from a friend near you using broadband .. maybe it help0

Have just signed with NewNet and will be connected this Thursday. Signed up for their 'M' package at £17.95 8MB 12GB download limit. Had been with Virgin but had been experiencing terrible speeds, especially in the evenings.
Can't wait for NewNet!0
