Sorry sorry, it's a Ford Puma 1.6 petrol, Y reg. Thank you for comments so far, I don't know whether I should phone another gargage for a quote, whether this is ok, or even take it for another MOT, comments will all be taken into consideration when I am a little more sober!DFW Nerd #1310

My MOT guy is fair (i hope), I have a chat with him and he points things out saying thats a bit borderline
will need doing in so many miles or something thats not a failure item but worth repairing.
Last time he said my brakes will need doing in a few thousand miles, As i was towing a caravan for a 2 week
holiday i got them done straight away. Mate took the one side off and said these pads are only about half worn
many thousands of miles left. But the otherside had one pad worn more than the rest.
Stripped and cleaned everything and all sorted. He remembers and checks to make sure everything he mentioned
last time has been done.
Anything thats a definate fail gets a fail though, No favours in that area.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

Who's they? The 2nd MOT test station will not know of any previous fails.0 -
Rear axle bushes are bad on the fiesta/puma. £40 new
Both rear brake pipes. Not much £ but quite labour intensive
Front Wheel bearing. £30
New ball joint. £40 for whole arm
Factor prices plus fitting.
I would ring round a few places see what prices they give you for the work. You should be able to submit it for a free retest within 10 working days at the original testing station.
You should be grateful you don't need new sills. My fiesta basically needed what yours needs plus welding. I would let someone else do the work though everything will be a nightmare to get off as mine was.0 -

It's the age old classic of taking a car to any old, or new for that matter, MOT station and expecting a fair unbiased test.
Yes it should be a given but we all know that isn't the case, there is incompetance at times and fishing for work at others.
The OP wouldn't probably know but recomendation is the favourite option.
I've taken all my cars and the family cars to the same family run garage for years, they don'y always pass, probably 1 in 3 is a fail. But I do know that it's a fair fail, either something I've missed or a known that I've not been made aware of.
They aren't the cheapest in the area, £45 but no retest fees etc.
Now there's a new outfit in town, MOT for £25, a fair saving.
Daughter took hers there and it passed, which convinced the wife to save £20 when her's was due, except she didn't, they failed the car for a slightly dragging rear brake which should have been an advisory, so it cost her another £10 for a retest, not such a saving.
Un beknown to me a few weeks later my other daughter took their BMW to the same place, it passed, but within a week the front brake pads had to be changed, 1 of them that didn't have a wear indicator fitted was down to the metal, and only the fact that I have access to the machinery to correct the disc did it save the expence of new discs.
I'll continue to use the garage I trust, fair treatment and competance is more important than saving a few quid in my view.
I'm not saying this is the case with the OP's garage, they may have got it right and done a fair test, but it's certainly left her guessing??;)I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -
Back to the OP:
On a puma of that age they are reknowned for rust related MOT failure - if yours isn't rusting around the rear arches and subframe, it will be shortly.
If that was me I think I'd fix wwhat needs fixing as cheaply as possible and get it the years MOT .Ignore the advisories. Then I'd be looking to sell it after christmas with a full MOT whilst it's still worth something and looking for something wihout the rust problems ,or else if you love the car and it's in goodd condition, run it into the ground over the coming year whilst saving for a replacement should it also fail its next MOT....
That's just wha I would do.0 -
welshgirl78 on a puma the bill sounds a bit excessive
the bushes are £10 each and with the right tool can be done in situ (i have the tool it cost £100 from franklins)
the rear brake pipes have joins up by the rear floor pan sop are easy to change on a ramp while doing the bushes
front wheel bearing is the most expensive bit
anti roll bar is a drop link and these are also £10 from the factors plus fitting
get another quote is my advice
it sounds a fair mot for this car by the way0 -

The only problem with selling it with a new mot is that the advisories are on the certificate, so a buyer would know they would have to pay for these to be done sometime.0 -

If the first MOT place is trying it on and it passes the second test then any checks would show that there are no issues.Who's they? The 2nd MOT test station will not know of any previous fails.
I'll leave you to have a guess who 'they' are.0
