MOT fail - any advice appreciated

Thank you if you even read this, it's pretty dull! I failed my MOT today and was wondering if the £440 + VAT is reasonable

Reasons are:

Offside front anti roll bar linkage has excessive play in ball joint

Nearside rear brake excessively corroded

Offside rear brake bike excessively corroded

Nearside rear axle sub-frame has excessive play in a pin/bush

Offside rear axle sub-frame has excessive play in a pin/bush

Offside front wheel bearing rough when rotated

Advisory
Exhaust system deteriated
Both front brake pipes corroded

Any comments most welcome, I am afraid I have no idea

If the price is reasonable (they also offered me £430 cash - I go there regularly but am not 100% sure about them!) do you think it is worth getting the advisory things done too?

Thank you thank you :p

Very Very Very cheap, Normally when top secret invisible cars fail their MOT the repair bill is 10 times
    what you have been quoted.

Quote sounds reasonable for a normal road car thats not a secret.

Did it fail on all that or are some of them advisories? Double check the fail sheet.

What are they replacing and what are they only going to adjust to remove play etc.

Is this a private post/insider info issue?

Op has made it pretty clear where the fails and advisories lie,
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed
  • Get a second opinion. Or just take it for an MOT elsewhere and see what it fails on this time.

But not what the car is.
On a Ferrari that's awesome value. On a Fiesta, not so.....

Not sure on the price but for the advisories, I'd definitely sort out the corroded brake pipes if you like stopping. But from all the low corrosion that it's suffering from, I'd advise that you stop parking it in a pond.

Will this work now that the MOTs are all stored electronically?
What would happen if the OP took the car to another garage who carried out the test and when entering the information discovered that the motor had recently failed on other items?

There may also be a problem when it comes to selling the car.
Any potential purchaser can view the MOT history online and could spot that the car failed on a number of items which were had not been repaired.
  • When they check the MOT on line they'll just see that it failed on xx/xx/xxxx and then passed on yy/xx/xxxx there's no proof of repairs

If the first MOT place is trying it on and it passes the second test then any checks would show that there are no issues.

Should have said 10 times more. But im crap at typing.

As Nev said. No mention of what car its for and if it actually failed on all the points mentioned in the 1st post,
Or if any of those were advisories or just recommended items.

    Or £440..

We had a car fail an MOT once and we were gutted. We simply didn't have the money to get it fixed (several hundred quid) and I needed it for work 18 miles away. We panicked... severely panicked. Then I remembered we had another MOT place next to my neighbours old bodyshop.

Drove it to them and asked their advice.. they checked it over and reckoned there was nothing wrong with it so sent us to reception to beg for a spare test. As luck would have it one of their appointments failed to show up so they took our car in and it came out with a clean bill of health and a new MOT.

Best £45 we've ever spent and it saved us a lot of money on repairs that wern't actually needed for the emissions.

Some MOT testers are simply too strict and will fail a car on any minor detail whilst others will give you a genuine test. I put my car in for a test in Feb and despite expecting it to fail the bloke said it was fine but there were a couple of advisories he'd expect to be sorted within the next 12 months. Before anyone suggests they may be a dodgy test station, my partner put the other car in for an MOT and they failed it on a defective top mount after a bad repair by another company and I've seen them fail numerous other vehicles while sitting in the waiting room. They don't do repairs so they have no conflict of interest in getting work out of a failure.
