thanks guys, I'll give it a go. The valve would prob be as old as the house - 11 years - and is definitely slightly shorter than the 'standard' ones which seem to be sold everywhere.

Looks like there is only just room to cut the pipe as there is another attachment directly below the union nut - tried to upload a photo to show you but wouldn't let me - but it looks something like this, but is a brass colour. It looks like another isolation valve?
If you google '15mm Full Bore Isolating Valve' there's a photo on ScrewFix website. It might not be this but it looks like it.

    Thanks again

You can use a pipe slice in confined spaces, no trouble.

If you are going to extend as I mentioned above, you might find it easier to cut the pipe a bit further back (away from the defective valve, if you catch my drift) then use the connector as above. Just need to steal a longer piece of pipe....:)

Incidentally, if you are going to add a new piece of pipe, you might find it easier to install the valve on the end of the pipe first (then connect to the cut pipe using the connector). If you have installed the valve correctly (nipped up the pipe enough) you should be leak free from the off. If you use a speedfit fitting, you can uncouple them quite easlily, so when in 10 years when the value packs in :) changing it will be easy as.

O)k look this is not the correct thing to do, that would be to actually fix the real issue, the stuck valve, BUT, since it's off and not leaking, temporalily buy a cut in tap from from wickes or such.

Tjhey clamp on and take a feed to a garden hose or washing machine etc.

Have to add I would never do this myself as it's just delying the innevitable issue of the stuck tap, but it will get your washing done, and safely, ;););)
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed
