Cheapest place for wild bird food

I've seen a robin feeding from ours.
We got a free box of cereal that nobody liked and the birds made short work of that this morning
Bairn has spotted loads of different types of birds, and we've also had a racing pigeon who spent a few hours in our garden yesterday. I wondered if he was en-route somewhere and fancied a rest! Here I go again on my own....0 -
Robins will feed on bird tables.
No bird table
We have rats. We also have a rookery at the end of the drive and if I put anything down on a table either the rats or the rooks get it
I know rooks are birds as well but Im trying to feed songbirds only
I shall have to think of something as we have a lot of robins here0 -
Must admit I have put a wire grid around our bird table to keep the doves at bay but the other smaller birds get in easily0

A squirrel-proof bird feeder will let little birds in to feed but keep bigger birds out - the kind with the cage around the outside. Maybe you could sit one at ground level?
GJW Titmuss seemed to do a variety of wild bird seed so might do one with a different selection of seeds that suits better. Another site I know of is Jungle Gold, I used to get various grains and seeds for my rats (then they started doing their own small-animal feed mixes which were even handier!), they do a range for various wild bird species - http://www.junglegold.com/british-and-wild-bird-food-c-34.html0 -
Hi.
I dont know much about birds or bird feed, but i went into poundland the other day and there were loads of bird feeders and bird food/balls in there.

Have a look in amongst the cat/dog stuff on the link and you'll see some of the stuff i am on about, but there was much more stuff in the actual shop.0 -

Thats what I have, seed feeders and nut feeders in cages. The rooks will still get the fat balls as they work together to get the lids off and get the balls out.
Just I notice a lot of bids pecking around the ground. I have been putting meal worms and suet sprinkled into the gravel but now the snow is here its getting hidden - and like I say I have enough trouble with rats and mice0 -
Oh I like the doves, my all time count was about 14 at one time - they kept moving!!
Oh was in the kitchen today making a lardy treat thing for the birds.
They do all seem extra hungry this year - is it a sign of a bad winter coming?0 -
Could you make a feeding box of some sort? If it's open-topped then birds can fly in, but you can have a solid base and sides to prevent the food getting lost in the snow/grass. You could leave it out in the day for the birds but pack it away for dusk and dawn when rats are most active (they may cotton on to the timing eventually but being crepuscular, and wary creatures, they're unlikely to come out in the middle of the day unless there's a really tempting incentive or they're desperate!)0

Ok I now need a mortgage to feed the greedy wee things
Daily I put out two full seed feeders of mixed seeds that I have also mixed in, suet, meal worms, sunflower kernels, nyjar(sp) and sunflower seeds.
They also munch their way through three full peanut feeders and at least 12 fat balls a week
Oh and I keep the bird bath as free of ice as possible
Think Im running a 4 star feeding station here

Remember to never feed birds cooking fat it's not good/safe for them (can't remember which the RSPB website explains!)0
