Cheapest place for wild bird food

Bought a bird feeding station which is proving extremely popular due to the icy weather this week. Yesterday we had a queue on the fence waiting to use it :D

As we're going through loads, where's the cheapest place to buy bird seed, peanuts and fat balls from?

It's brilliant fun watching the birds and my daughter loves it!
Here I go again on my own....

You should be able to buy sacks from petshops which will be cheaper than buying the small 1-2 kilo bags. Invest in a metal dustbin (preferably with lockable lid) to stop the local rats having a feast too.
May even be cheaper to buy online, especially if you find somewhere with free or capped postage. I've bought pet bits from GJW Titmuss and think their postage is capped around £7 unless you go over 25kg. They do 5kg and 20kg bags - cheapest 20kg being £8.25, or 5kg for £3.99.
5kg of seed, 5kg of peanuts, and 50 fat balls comes to just under £30 with postage and will probably last you a while! There may even be cheaper deals online if you look.

make your own fat balls using lard/ suet some kitchen crumbs etc and in freezing weather rotate them from your store as when they are frozen solid they are inedible . Hth

I get the big sacks of seed (20/25kg?) from Costco for around £5. They don't always have it in so I pick up a couple of sacks when I see it.
  • Home Bar*gains have cheap food if you've one near (8 fatballs for 69p or a tub of 50 for £7, 1.8kg seed for 99p etc).

£stretcher also have large (I think they were 12.5kg) sacks of seed for around £8 the other day (sorry didn't look too hard as was too far to carry such a big one!).

They deliver for free if you spend more than £30
  • I was also going to say Petplanet. I noticed too they sell a big plastic bucket for 4.99 to keep it all in.
I'm ordering one of those when I next buy bird food - which will be pretty soon as they are eating us out of house and home!.
I'm ordering a big bag of Iams too 15kg for just over £30 so it will be P&P free.
We can't move for cat and bird food.
  • Welcombe to the wonderful world of birds, I get so much pleasure from seeing them in the garden and feel quite good in myself for going out on a freezing morning and giving them water. When you get a robin sat on the bucket as you wash the car rewards you for everything. Regards food I shop at so many differant places and a large bag can be reasonable from your local pet shop at the right time, I would look for a good quality one that does not have to much wheat in it as there is much less waste.

Cant throw enough peanuts at them - eating two full feeders a day - I have feeders in two areas - one of which is opposite the kitchen window and washing up is now a pleasure

Regarding the Robins - am I right thinking they are ground feeders?

Robins will feed on bird tables.
