Refused refund for faulty TV

Hi
I bought one of those ultra portable battery powered TV's on Monday from a market that was very cheap. (£25)
I got it home but only used it yesterday (Tuesday) and found that it wouldnt work. I live quite a while from the market but as I had nothing to do all day decided to take it back. However I got to the market (15 mile drive) and the stall refused to give me a refund saying 'only the manager gives refunds and she only works Monday, Friday and Saturday'.
Is this right and legal? I cant get there on these days and its going to be difficult to get my money back.

Hi. I just wrote a reply - then lost it so here goes 2nd attempt.
What the assistant said is a consignment of geriatric shoemakers (load of old cobblers for the plain English brigade). The goods are faulty and so you should get a refund. If you have problems with the trader see if having a chat with the market office helps.Find out who you are and do that on purpose (thanks to Owain Wyn Jones quoting Dolly Parton)0 -
Is it an analogue TV?0

she's probably right that only the manager can authorise refunds; although doesn't the law say that the retailer is obliged to repair or replace? and refunds are at their discretion?0

If it was only £25 then Hintza has probably given you the answer.
You have probably bought an analogue TV and are trying to use it in an area where the analogue signal has been turned off - does your main TV in the house still work on the analogue channels (those are in the tuning menu on the TV that only offered BBC1/2 ITV1, CH4, CH5 but no others).
How old is the TV? - if more than 5 years, then that might be the answer.
If it is an analogue TV then it probably still works properly, but there is no longer a signal being broadcast that it can pick up (hence its price) - in which case the set is not faulty - just vintage!
It's like buying an video player that uses tape cassettes - they still work, but you can't buy new films for them.0 -
Don't you have a "reasonable" time to reject goods for a full refund if they compromise your SOGA rights? I would say testing the following day and finding a fault is a reasonable time frame, and so a refund can be demanded.0

Buying a TV off of the market is a bit...well....optimistic, isn't it?
It's no doubt an analogue TV which will work fine in an area with an analogue signal. If all you're getting is snow, then yes, it's analogue. You have no legal right to a refund unless it is faulty, but at this stage the seller would have to prove that it isn't faulty, as opposed to you having to prove that it is.0 -
Don't freeview boxes convert digital to analogue?Competition wins: Where's Wally Goody Bag, Club badge branded football, Nivea for Men Goody Bag0

No, a Freeview box picks up the digital signal and feds it to your TV.
OP, you have no automatic right to a refund if the item is faulty, the retailer can offer you a repair, a replacement or a refund at their discretion. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
