That is wrong. You can MOT a car 365 days a year if you wish. The 4 week rule is so that the new MOT expires 12 months after the expiry of the current one if there is 4 weeks or less remaining. If there is more than 4 weeks remaining on the current MOT, the new MOT will expire 12 months from the test date.
i always thought you could carry it over to 13 months

that'll be it. 13 months if done 'early' or twelve months if you do it whenever you want.

Standard to the engine or standard to the car?

My engine had one, but my car has never had one.

The new MoT test requirements come in 1st January as stated, however the new additions do not become a failure until some unspecified date in the future. (VOSA have not yet announced when that will be as far as I know, but you might reasonably think at least 3 months...)

Therefore on the 2nd January, all you get is an advisory that the cat is missing and should be replaced.

Wasn't there talk of extending it to a 2 year test rather than an annual one?

VOSA inspector told me that it's most likely to become a failure on the 1st of may.

Unsure how true that is though
