'use of vehicle for hire or reward' = Takeaway Driver
There is no hire or reward involved. The only moneys collected will be the cost of the meal which is returned to the employer. You are not hiring yourself and vehicle to the takeaway place but being employed by them.
The definition of “hire and reward” encompasses a wide variety of operations; the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency defines hire and reward as encompassing any payment in cash or kind by (or on behalf of) passengers which gives them a right to be carried.

Yes there is hire and reward. You are using your vehicle for monetary gain, whether that is being paid directly for doing it or doing it for a wage.

Either way it is business mileage which is not included in Class A business use which is the one that costs the least. Class A business use is travel to and from clients for your own business, not delivering stuff for someone elses.
• I work in insurance for one of the largest firms in the uk

listen to hammyman he is telling you as it is

I wouldnt quite have used as many words as him but he is 100% accurate in all of his posts
• and the most likely outcome if you do declare this to your current insurer is not extra loadings but simply a decline in cover

Well that is one person I will not be listening to.

There is no hire or reward. I have just spoken with my insurance company and asked them what they class as hire or reward. Surprise surprise, it's the same as DVLA's take on it. Carrying goods is not hire or reward.

Brokers may want to sell you it to get the commission but there is no requirement

Yes you do, but the affect of tax is lessened by personal allowance on the first job, 2nd job is subject to full tax

Some people are not aware of how the tax system works, hence can be shocked by the amount of tax paid on secondary income

No you don't. If you income is increased by £X either in overtime or a secondary job it won't matter which. Your taxable income will still be the same.

I asked them about delivering goods and collecting payment for said goods. They stated that hire or reward applies to passengers

• If people did this legit I suspect unless money was increased by the takeaway it wouldn't be worth your while due to insurance cost

They are wrong. With lorries there are two classes of operators licence. One is a restricted operators licence and only allows the carriage of your own goods for use in your own business for which you must not be paid - i.e the customer can't even pay a delivery fee.

The second one is carrying goods and being paid for carrying goods and is classed as a "hire and reward".

So no, hire and reward doesn't just apply to passengers. And BTW it is VOSA who you should be contacting, not DVLA. DVLA have little to do with anything other than vehicle and driver licencing.

Why don't you phone your insurers and say you're going to deliver pizzas for your employer using your own car and see what they say?
