Cheers chaps... think I'll be giving the delivery job a miss. Anyway, I'm trying to watch my weight - being stuck around curries all night is bad..... misses will need climbing equipment to get her leg over my belly if I'm not careful

They lied to you. Ordinary car insurance is for social, domestic and commuting to a place of work.

The local police in my old town used to stage 6 monthly road blocks on a weekend night to stop takeaway delivery drivers. They used to take the vehicles off the road for the rest of the night for any they found with the incorrect business use, incorrect licence, no cbt, no L plates etc etc. They specifically checked the specific business use as having Social Domestic & Pleasure or SDP + Commuting or Class 1 Business Use (Own business) as not having the correct cover was the vast majority.

You know how badly the pizza mopeds drive, it was quite amusing watching the police trying to stand out in front of them to get them to pull over.

As other posters have mentioned class one (own business) is not the correct use, the correct cover is expensive as takeaway drivers have a lot of claims due to the way they drive and the way they leave the vehicles often with keys in them / running

Don't believe the takeaway owner if he tells you that you will be covered by his insurance or that he will pay for 'any problems'.

Very good advice, we used to get the local non chain takeaway restaurants coming in to insure mopeds and cars. They would always insist that this vehicle (Generally 3rd or more of this type of vehicle they owned) was for their use only, often covered insured only rather than any driver, was owned and registered in the restaurants name and very very rarely with proper business use on, often just for Socal, Domestic and pleasure.

We arranged cover for a few after getting them to give us a letter it was not for delivery. However we stopped after getting a few accidents which were investigated by insurer. This meant the driver / rider was sent into us who as the policy was insured only to drive would pretend to be policyholder

I have, what I would class as, standard business cover on my insurance (£8 pa extra) (ETA it would appear that I have Class 2 as per http://www.life-assurance-bureau.co.uk/car-insurance/faqs/car-Can-I-use-my-car-for-business-use.htm)

    The wording for this is

'Use by the policyholder in connection with the policyholder's business or that of the policyholder's employer'

Now unless insurance companies have got their own weird interpretation of English, that covers me as a takeaway driver.

Most chains do provide cover nowadays, as it's impossible to afford the insurance yourself.
They take a copy of your licence, insurance etc, and give you a copy of their policy to produce if you're stopped.

Your Insurer have granted you that cover based on your own particular job and you needing business use. If you advised your Insurer you were now a takeaway delivery driver using your own vehicle. It's highly likely they would apply a hefty load for the occupation in conjunction with the type of use. Plenty of Insurers would actually decline the occupation as takeaway drivers are not popular

But if I do 40 hours per week as a train driver and 2 hours a week as a takeaway driver what is my occupation? It's still train driver.

Insurance quotation questionnaires ask if you have a second occupation. = Takeaway Driver

Standard Business Use insurance add-on excludes 'use of vehicle for hire or reward' = Takeaway Driver

You normally have to declare all occupations
