Internet without a bt line

Hi all we have just paid to move into a private rented house in a village. As I work online the first thing we did was set up bt as it is a small village there is no cable services available. We were due to move tomorrow but BT have rang and said I need to pay £250:eek::eek: deposit.I asked why so high as there is currently a line available so it is not for installing a new line but the person said it had no info just that I had to pay £250 which at anytime of is alot but especially so close to xmas.

My question is will I have to save up to be able to get the internet or are there non cable companies that will provide internet without a bt line whatever happens I can not move tomorrow now as BT only informed me today of all this 2weeks later:(

If you need to get online urgently, why not buy an Internet dongle.

It plugs into the USB port on your computer and connects to the Internet via a mobile provider's network.

You can buy them in supermarkets and phone stores. Top them up like pay-as-you go phones.

The normal BT charge for a reconnection is around £130. But many other providers will discount this rate-why did you pick BT?
If there is no cable provision then BT based ADSL broadband is the only other landline option.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • Thank you both will look into a dongle sounds like my best option.

It might be worth checking on network providers' websites which network has the best coverage in your area.

I find 3 very good mobile broadband.Check coverage first but it is generally good.
For about £20 you will get the dongle and credit. As long as you do not download films and music £15 credit could be enough for a month.
