I have a very large property in the pennines - 7 bedrooms. In the worst of the winter I use 200 litres every 10 days or 1000, say, in about 2 months. I have a watchman which is very accurate and "counts you down" reliably. You seem to have had a sudden loss - theft most likely, but a sudden loss by any account. Beware leaks - you are resonsible for any clean-up of the environment.
    regards

We have a 5 year old 5 bed 3 bathroomed house (20 radiators) and moved in October - we filled the oil tank about a week after we moved in - an 1100 litre tank - which was showing just over a quarter full and it took 721 litres to fill it - so there must have been about a third left in the tank.

The tank was filled on 2nd November and to date we have used about a quarter of a tank - we have the heating and hot water on twice a day - about an hour and a half in the morning and about 6 hours in the evening - (the water isn't on 6 hours in the evening - probably round an hour or 2). The house is very well insulated and we have the heating thermostat set at 18 degrees. The showers in the house use water heated by the boiler - I did wonder why we had the biggest hot water tank I had ever seen! Four of us live in the house.

We expect the tank of oil to last us about 3 months over the winter - but we're new to oil heating and so really aren't sure, so we are monitoring the oil tank - OH looks at the level virtually weekly at the moment. We will keep an eye on it until we get a handle on the amount we are using.

I would be having palpitations if we had gone through a tank in just over 2 weeks.

Did you check the oil level when you actually moved into the house properly? You said you had the tank filled at the beginning of August - was it actually full in November?

What are the minimum setting it was using between beginning of August and 18th November? That's about 31/2 months on minimum settings before you began using it properly.

What about hot water has that been constantly on?

We use 500 litres a month during winter, but we live in an old cold house and have half of the rads turned off.
  • DOH! (and hurray) looks like it is probably just a problem with the Apollo oil monitoring Watchman thingy, after I phoned the oil order in the blessed thing went back to being 3 pips down so the oil looks to be miraculously back. Thanks for all the advice, will get a dipstick sorted out and a new pair of specs for hubby! Will have confirmation tonight on just how much has actually been used when I find out how much oil the supplier was able to get in the tank. And yes I also have a wood burner which is great to supplement heating... But that's another story, I am finding logs are quite expensive also!! It's not cheap living out in the wilds...

Get your logs from an arborist or tree surgeon

Its cheaper if you can bulk store it. just got a full mwb transit full too the roof for 90 pound.(but had too split the rounds).

our appolo watchman is hard too read. 1 line is aprox 200 litres

We are using mostly wood this year as we spend most time in livingroom. Next year i am going too hook up another woodburner.
  • I use about 2500 litres per year for a 4 bed bungalow by seaside.

Heating on for about 7 hours/day in winter with little use May-October.
House is well insulated with D.Glazing.

    This will depend
    a) how the Watchman was set up and
    b) on the size of the tank.
