How great has your mum been?

Just been reading another thread on here asking for advice on how to be a good bridesmaid, and I said that the OP should contact the MOB, to make sure everything works well.

It made me realise how amazing my Mum has been in helping me plan my wedding - she's making my cake, has arranged the flowers, has visited the church and venue with me, and met all the people there, she has constant ideas and little bits and bobs that are going to make things really special - and she has really 'got' some things (like having freesias in my bouquet, to honour her mum, who isn't with us any more).

I couldn't have done it without her, so let's hear it for our mums. Mums rock. :T:T:T
:grin:If at first you don't succeed, then sky-diving isn't for you

My Mum hasn't been able to get as involved as she hoped, but she has enjoyed some things particularly. Buying my dress with my best friend and my Mum was brilliant, and she is storing at at her house until the wedding. I think she goes in and looks at it every now and then too :) We're also storing vast amounts of booze there, bless her. She won't know what to do with all the space afterwards!

Bless her, at the moment she's down with my grandad who's in hospital and probably won't make it to the wedding :( She spends so much time caring for him, I really hope she can enjoy the wedding as one day for relaxing and basking in some reflected glory and love.

reading this makes me realise how lucky I am to have 2 fabulous aunty's (through marriage) as my mum has never been much of a mum.

She was the only girl out of 7 children and so used to getting her own way.
My grandma more or less brought me up, whilst my mum had better things to do - she has never been maternal, and has never been a typical grandparent to my children. She even missed my youngest's christening to go down to london to watch the london marathan!

I consider myself to be extremely lucky to have 2 aunty's who have covered mos of the duties covered above by others mums, and they were both very involved, very excited and thoroughly enjoyed the planning and the day...

I gave up feeling sad about my mum years ago - nobody can change who she is - but for those of you with great mums out there - make sure you appreciate them!!

  • Yay!! My Mum is awesome (most of the time ;)). She is helping me make my dress, as well as making my MoH's dress, and is also helping make the cake and do the flowers. The best thing is that she has not tried to take over at all, and lets H2B and me make all the decisions, including guest list.

We're going shopping together for my dress fabric the day after tomorrow - I can't wait!!! :j

bramble1, sometimes that really is the best option, it depends on the mother and MiL concerned though!

nikki44, I'm really glad that you have mother figures in your life if your birth mother can't fill that role.

Do you know what? I have the greatest mum. Why? Because she is keeping her nose out. Lol. After reading so many threads on here I am so grateful that my mum is letting me plan my wedding (okay 'us' and 'our'). She isn't interfering or offering 'suggestions'. She is happy to listen and ooos and ahhhs in all the right places. And she is the bestest mum for paying the difference between two dresses so I could get The One.

And to be fair the Mother of the Groom isn't doing too bad a job either.
  • My mum has been really good. SHe does have a tendancy to take over planning of things but she has stayed out and only offered help when Ive asked (I think she knows im too much like her and will always tell her when shes starting to take over!!). There has been a few times when shes tested my patience- but shes my mum and thats just her, her heart is in the right place.

Ohs mum has been very good aswell, and gets so excited when I show her what Ive got.

My mum lives 3hrs away but came to my 2nd dress fitting, bought my veil while there and put a deposit down on my cake and helped choose a design.we speak every few days and she gives good advice and listens well, so id give her 3 cheers
  • My mum is great and better than I expected actually :) she has come to wedding fayres with me and helped when I needed advice or help looking for certain companies. She asked if she was taking over and she wasn't at all and told me to tell her if she does lol :) so far everything has been fine, we have similar taste and ideas so things should be ok.

My OHs mum has Alzheimer's so she doesn't know what's happening but were both really hoping she will still be here in 2013 for the wedding :)

My Mum's also been great. She came to look at the venue with me, been to a few wedding fayres and has been dress shopping lots of times with me! She's paying for my dress too (even though the one i've fallen in love with is quite expensive!). We don't really talk about the wedding too much (it's 10 months away yet) but this is just what we're like - it's not taking over my life in the same way it does for others!
