Who did that? Was it after several warnings?Oh i know but i was just wondering as i had a bank account closed last month because i went £1 overdrawn.
As a general principle, follow the bank's T&Cs and don't trust them - use the tools available to you (e.g. Excel or equivalent) and trust yourself. Even if you can argue for the circumstances you describe that they acted negligently and get them to return your account to whatever status it would have had if they hadn't, I'm not sure it's a battle which wins any war.0 -
Basically i had a gym membership for £15/mth and i cancelled it throught the gym the day of the direct debit. I asked them loads is it completely cancelled and would the direct debit for the following month come out and the women said no today was the last payment they would take. I called my bank and told them and they said the direct debit was cancelled however....the following month a payment of £15 to the gym was taken out of my bank making me £1 overdrawn. I called my bank and asked what had happened and they said because my account was only a basic account with no overdraft it would be closed in 30 days. I argued and made many calls and was told that the cancellation on the account had already gone through and it couldn't be stopped. So i went and got a new bank account somewhere else 3 weeks ago and now this has happened so im worried about losing this account too!!0

Oh no only that it was their silly mistake. No worries anyway they made 2 more payments today for the same amount then withdrew 3 lots of the amount so it's all sorted now.0

Either the bank were being untruthy and the direct debit mandate was not cancelled at their end or the gym set up a new direct debit mandate. Have you established which? Does e.g. online banking say when it was set up?I called my bank and told them and they said the direct debit was cancelled however....the following month a payment of £15 to the gym was taken out of my bank making me £1 overdrawn.
Was this a Co-op Cashminder and had you had 2 warnings prior to this? If not, I'd be interested to know which account has a 1 strike rule. I don't think it's common, so don't think your account is going to be closed over being brought once into the red without a formal overdraft.I called my bank and asked what had happened and they said because my account was only a basic account with no overdraft it would be closed in 30 days.
As for the double credit, report it to the bank but act as if the money isn't there, i.e. continue by assuming your balance is £104 less than it is. Let the bank sort it and make the adjustment.
Yes: the bank might make an adjustment themselves, leaving you with £104 short. This is especially likely if due to glitch rather than someone initiating a payment twice. There's also the possibility that OP is being overpayment / advance fee scammed - this should be considered unless you know and trust the sender - and if you "return" the money somewhere you might unwittingly be crediting a fraudster. Let the bank deal with it.sokillni wrote:If asked is there any reason why you would not refund the extra payment?0
