RENTING? Have you checked to see that your landlord has permission from their mortgage lender to rent the property? If not, you could be thrown out with very little notice.

The problem of empty homes is that not all empty homes are neglected and out of use. Letting the councils anywhere near the decision making progress to decide which properties to seize is a recipe for disaster.

A property may already be in the progress of being renovated for 6 months to a year before it is put on the market or moved into.

agreed, but when there are whole streets of sturdy terraced properties standing abandoned, potentially destined for demolition rather than renovation for local families...see for example http://www.savebritainsheritage.org/news/article.php?id=177 it is an outrage.

That is kind of my point, councils are a complete joke.

Those properties aren't abandoned the residents where moved out by the the council who where following the directives of pathfinder.

There is an estate where I live that is in limbo as it has been earmarked for redevelopment but the plans have been put on hold. The residents of the estate who were council tenants where asked to vote on whether they wanted redevelopment or not. The question for the vote however wasn't put in those terms they were asked if they wanted their properties updating with new kitchens and bathrooms.

Predictably they voted in favour, only to later realise the councils true plan is to knock down most of the estate and rebuild but with population density doubled.

The kicker is 70% of the estate is owner occupied and they didn't get to vote but now face the prospect of compulsory purchase, The new properties which they will be offered will be smaller with greatly reduced gardens and will be more expensive.

Yep, I know why they are empty but the properties are "abandoned" in that they are currently standing empty and useless.

The C4 prog ( split over tonight and tomorrow night) should be interesting. Apparently shows, as an example on a small scale, how a shopkeeper is persuaded to turn empty premises into accommodation for previously homeless people.

Just watched the first half anyway, it makes me sick to see the conditions these tenants are living in.

Why oh why don't the councils prosecute?

So a single 'non-priority' chap turns up to Bournemouth Council and presumably asks whether any local landlords will take Housing Benefits - they signpost him to a landlord with sub-standard properties willing to take potential benefit applicants. Then Tracey, a woman fleeing DV from London, turns up with a dodgy property with the same landlord. Welcome to the system that saw less than 454 new social housing starts in the first 6 months of this financial year - priceless.......

The undercover female reporter in the Apollo Guesthouse (B&B) in South London finds 'bedbugs' and then stays and gets bitten - priceless......

For everything else there's Grant Shapps.... priceless.....
