Boiler Servicing Advice

All

I have recently moved into a property that was inherited and it turns out the original owner hasn't had a service done in approx 3 years on the boiler so wanted to get one done.

In my old place, the boiler was just on the kitchen wall so it would be a case of pulling the cover off etc....

But with my new place, the property is quite old and we have the water tank in a cupboard in a hall and the pipes appear to head behind the gas fire in the living room (and thats where everything appears to be - when I turn the gas on, the pilot can be heard firing up from behind the gas fire)

I am really not sure what sort of system this is at all and would the cost of servicing something like this be any different to a standard on the kitchen wall boiler.

I want to make a few calls to enquire but don't want to sound like I have no idea on the phone (I really don't have a clue!)

I am quite young and have no idea with all this boiler stuff

Thanks so much in advance for your help :)

It is an open flued back boiler on an open vented system. Yes it is more expensive to service (properly) as it needs a full strip, clean and vacuum. At a guess decent guys will probably start at about 80.00. Very important to get it serviced annually as a build up of dust can cause problems quite quickly.
  • Ollski is correct. It is more expensive because you are effectively servicing 2 appliances, the boiler and the fire front. I charge £90 inc.VAT.

Hmm. Seems I'm too cheap then at £70!

Largely depends on local cost of living/property prices, but £70 is not expensive for a full, proper stripdown service anywhere in the country.

Just like my spacesaver 50 CF :)
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

As the life expectancy of neither can be established, that is a rather daft remark.
Bearing in mind that most back boilers are around 30 years old, and current boilers can easily last 20 years and more ( provided they are of good quality and properly installed and maintained ), I wouldn't put any large wagers on it either.

I'm waiting in for the man to come and fix my Combi at the moment, it just want fire up. I pay £13+ per mth for cover and when i phoned yesterday they tried to get me to increase my cover by an extra £5+ per month so that i could have an annual service, No doubt the guy will ask again when he comes.
What do others think, what cover do you have. I thought do i need a service if they'll come and fix it anyway.

Think you should start a new thread I would always have my boiler serviced annually. However don't have to have it done by same people as your boiler cover.

Fair enough there is nothing no solid evidence as such either way !!

But fact is there are many more parts to a modern day boiler, they are full of electonics and sensors , its something i get told regulary by qualified boiler installers i meet in my trade.

They also tell me as long as a old back boiler is serviced correctly, there is just less far less to fail on them,

Agreed it will be far less efficient than a modern day boiler for sure , but thats not what i stated here.

Incidently I can establish that my old back boiler was 36 years old and never missed a beat before i replaced it for the 30cdi , reason being I wanted efficency of a modern day boiler !!

I will be more than happy if my 30cdi lasts half that time!!

oh and sorry Lisa9982 for going off topic slightly , i hope you get your boiler sorted ASAP !!
