Carphone Warehouse refund/exchange faulty phone after 5 months?

OK, it gets stranger. I decided to double check first thing this morning using their own complaints form online that a refurb phone was the best offer they could make.
I got an email back a few hours later saying yes a refurb was what their policy allows.
However, a few hours later, I just got a call from their repair guys who are now saying they've authorised a full refund for £79.99 which leaves me free to purchase a brand new handset of my choice.
As a company they seem very disjointed, ie the left hand doesn't seem to know what the right hand is doing. However they do have some of the best deals on mobiles which is why so many people use them.
