DH with cancer & us grandparents-a year on

I posted on here just over a year ago as I was not coping too well with DH ill health & DS's situation. Had great support from here & thought it was about time I updated . Not had a lot of time over the last 12 months.
Brief recap-DH diagnised with myeloma Sept 2010 needing 2 ops to replace vertebre in his neck with titanium rods. Possible radiotherapy & or chemo in early 2011.
At same time DS announced his American GF was 33 weeks pregnent.
DH recovered well from the surgery. No radiotherapy needed. 6 months of chemo followed which did not suppress the myeloma enough so he underwent a bone marrow transplant in August using his own healthy cells. 3 weeks in solitary confinement due to no immunity.
His positive attitude thoughout has been amazing & he has now got the go ahead to return to work in January. Unsure as yet what will happen long term regarding work as he has no intention of putting in the sort of hours he was before. However he needs to go back for his own sanity even if it only for a few months. The boredom is now really getting to him. He has been doing all the cooking recently as he is a brilliant cook. Not sure if I can live up to his standards once he returns to work!
Now to DS. He returned from the States in early January following the birth of his son. We were fully prepared to accept that he may drop out of uni but he became very focussed on his course as well as getting 2 part time jobs to help support his GF & son.
We paid for GF & grandson to come over in the summer as obviously we could not go out there to visit due to DH health. Grandson proved a much needed distraction for DH before his transplant. DS is going over to US next week & they will get married while he is there. Next summer once DS has finished uni & hopefully goes full time in 1 of his jobs they will then be applying for visas to bring them over to the UK.. So hopefully by the autumn they will be able to start proper family life. We will not be at the wedding as DH still cannot fly & as it will be just a civil ceremony & a meal with her Dad afterwards we would rather save the money to help them next year.
As DH sick pay ran out I returned to my part time job in schools as well as keeping my business going. Financially I have managed to convince DH that we can manage just on my money if we have to. It would not leave anything over for luxurys which would have to come from savings but at least all the bills are paid.
It has not been an easy year but hopefully we can go into 2012 on a more positive note.

Thank you so much for updating us - I remember your post last year very well.
Your son and his girlfriend sound like they made esome good decisions and well done DS for getting his head down and working hard for their joint family future.
And it is great to hear your DH doing well, and that your DGS has brought happy distraction.
I hope the return to work is a sucess.I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once0 -

We didn't think so 12 months ago when they were coming up with 1 ludicrous idea after another. But must admit he has matured a lot over the last year. He is not yet 21 but certainly taking his responsibilities seriously.
It was always their intention to get married after uni anyway & having looked into the visa situation it will make the process simpler if they are already married. Not saying it will be plain sailing but hopefully not too many hiccups.
Thanks all for your good wishes.0
