Can I sell back unused heating oil?

I'm moving into a property that has an oil fired boiler, I am having gas connected and a combi boiler to replace it. The question I have is can I sell the unused oil back to the oil suppliers or is there a company that specialise in collecting it? I've googled it but to no avail.

Sorry, I can't advise re: buy back/collecting. But if you have a decent amount already tanked (which I assume will be free on move in date?) use it, then change over.
I did similar a while back, not a move to new home, just a change from oil to gas. New gas boiler sited and fitted to wall next to oiler, once fuel was all used up, then changed over, bricked up flue exit when all was complete.
Shame to have the bother to get rid, when you can put what you have to good use.........no?
Regards...........
Ps, boiler is situated in an outside boilerhouse, not in the home.0 -

I would be suprised if an oil delivery company would buy it back from you.
Firstly, they don't know how old it is. Oil goes off over time (1 year plus) and can breed bacteria that thicken the oil.
Secondly it could easily be contaminated with water, dirt, sediment, etc. especially when you get near the bottom of the tank.
If you really can't use it, you could pump it out, but make sure you filter it as you do so and check that the colour is still 'clear and bright'.
Then try and sell it to the local farmer, or some bloke down the pub who can use it in his diesel Montego.....!0 -
The other replies are correct - no-one will buy it back, in fact you will have to pay for it's correct disposal and also tank removal (if you Google 'oil tank removal' there are many companies who do this, seems to cost £200-£300 for an empty tank).
The stuff is valuable, so burn it off.0 -
Regarding empty oil tank, rules and regs may have changed since my tank removal, but called a local scrappy, picked up and removed for no charge, they of course would get scrap value.

Ask your neighbours. We've had quite a few in the village who have converted to Gas and they've let us have the oil for free (though we did give them some "drink" money). Hubby just got some clean drums and siphoned it out. Wouldnt expect to get much money for it though, as in all essence they are doing you a favour taking it, as others have said it will cost you for a legit company to take it.0

When we wanted to empty a tank to relocate it - we hired from a local tool hire shop a fuel transfer pump with hoses for £9/day - it runs from a car battery and it made the transfer so easy.
