... apparently Clarkson is now in touble for saying that trains should not be delayed by suicides

Why is it ok for the crowded throng to stand only inches from passing 100mph trains, but illegal to walk on the motorway hard shoulder?

you can't complain about dwarfism as the guy in the program is a dwarf, bit like lenny lenry gets away with black jokes....

Britain needs to seriously lighten up and rediscover a sense of humour don't you think?

Because trains cant swerve and hit someone by mistake

True, trains may be restrained by tracks, but people aren't and need protecting from the randomness of their behaviour.

Clarkson's opinion was common enough when I worked on the railway. Not that anybody cared about the commuters, but the effect on drivers and other staff was quite unwarranted.

Time was when railway staff had to clean up. I knew a platelayer who'd once had to pick up a severed head and push it along the line on a flat-bed trolley. The permanently bloodstained trolley then resumed its normal functions.

I think we felt that the utter thoughtlessness of such people probably had a lot to do with their predicament. When it's time for me to do myself in, I hope I'll be more considerate.

And I don't buy the rubbish about people not acting rationally in utter anguish. Leaving aside the fact that suicide may be a perfectly rational act, people generally have access to more immediate and convenient means, e.g. slitting their wrists. Anybody who jumps under a train has given some deliberate thought to the question of ways and means and carried out a deliberate sequence of steps to achieve their chosen goal.

I think what upset most people was not simply that they should 'get shot' - he went a bit 'OTT' and described detail e.g. 'their families should be made to watch'.... It was just a bit too much...

A very thoughtful comment. I think, in this context, there is an element of selfishness.

And, dear pqrdef, I hope you never feel the need to do yourself in. :)
