Clarkson again...

... apparently Clarkson is now in touble for saying that trains should not be delayed by suicides

... in rural areas, road users are routinely delayed by empty trains approaching a level crossing from several minutes away

How long does it take to stop a train?

Last month we were were told that an increase in motorway speed limits would generate economic growth

Check it out...

This should be in the Discussion Time Forum, it's hardly to do with House Prices.

It's true the level crossings are a nightmare they put the barriers down when the train is still 50 odd miles away. No wonder people think about running them.

I like the idea of give way, they have some on smaller roads where you only cross when its safe to do so, although I stress the smaller roads are very small rural farm ones.

There's a rural line close to me where each station is adjacent to the main road through each village... the trains stop at every station regardless, so why shut the road twice?

Several times a year people die after being run down by an empty train

We moan about waiting a few minutes, but when someone dies its Network Rail's fault for "playing with lives".

We cant have it both ways, and I think the "wait and not get killed way" is better than playing frogger at the crossings!

    He didnt say that.

What he actually said is something that most would agree with.

Branch line use is on the up and a rural train keeps many cars off the road. I have heard people use the same argument you are using to describe our local trains. Yet I use the train frequently and it is always got people on it and they have moved from a single carriage sprinter to 2 carriage trains and in recent years 3 carriage because of demand.

However, level crossings holding up cars is nothing to do with the thread.

How about we just do whatever they do in normal countries and shut up about it. That goes for pretty much everything.

Motorway closures following vehicle crashes are even more significant

Why is there no 'blame culture' whereby people who lose out due to motorway closures can claim from the offender's insurance policy?

He said it as part of the same interview that he spoke about public sector workers. Its been mentioned on that thread too, so really this one should be merged.
