Hi all, I was in an 18 month contract with aol which terminated some months ago. I did not renew and had not gotten around to shopping around yet. Drop out problems increased and aol were unable to offer appropriate solutions apart from to send me new filters and offer to reduce the cost of my package?!
I rang them 5 weeks ago and told them I was leaving and to request my mac code. I was advised that I would not need one, and would be billed up until the day my new service commenced. all fine - yes? No, today I have received a bill for £293.45 which I suspect is the equivalent of a years internet and call package. I think they have renewed my contract as opposed to cancelling it.
I have tried to ring the customer services to get an email address in which to contact, but have had the phone put down on me twice. (Not unusual incidentally for aol.
where does one go from here? I am not paying this bill, but am more than happy to pay for one month which I owe.
all help gratefully received.

AOL UK is now part of the TalkTalk Group but the AOL name lives on.
If you're not happy with the service, you have every right to move provider and you are entitled to receive your MAC code within 5 days, because you will need it to move broadband providers without interruption. You can move without it, but it takes three times as long and you'll be lucky to have a broadband connection for the best part of a month at least.
What exactly is that £293.45 for? Even AOL's website only works out to £243.60 a year with calls, rental and broadband. TalkTalk, who runs this charade, doesn't even come to £293.45 on any of their packages listed on the website.
Best bet is probably to talk to TalkTalk direct.0 -
AOL and TalkTalk and companies such as SKY dont use MAC code system right now since there LLU. When you get LLU broadband and telephone your not on the BT network so the mac code doesn't work, although ofcom is making a system for LLU i think.
AOL, TalkTalk services are actually really good now since they offer adsl2 connections which is really good. I have 2 broadband lines with talktalk.0 -
You can e-mail them through your online broadband account, if you use 'contact us' section. They take a few days to answer back tho.0

No idea what the £293.45 is for. a special rate just for me? I think it maybe some sort of made up figure to make my blood boil. I am on simmer now and awaiting a response to the email sent to them a couple of days ago. Incidentally, how does one go about contacting talktalk?
Thanks for your input

Thank you Espresso. I guess talk talk are used to it. One would have hoped that they would have learnt their lesson after paying their disproportionate fine - but maybe not. As for the staff who put the phone down when they are not able to deal with the query.................Nothing is so fatiguing as the eternal hanging on of an uncompleted task
