Policies end on a death, only the policy holder would be able to change details and obviously cant. If a claim was made it would be voided.

the policy holder isnt dead, he's too ill to drive.

Irrelevant and untrue anyway. A policy can be changed to 'the estate of ...' or in my fathers case I changed it to my mothers name.

I thought you couldnt insure a car that you have no financial interest in.

That is true but if you are being entrusted with someone elses property you have a financial interest in it because if you damage it whilst it is in your care you have a legal obligation to reinstate it (hence a financial interest)

You cannot insurer your neighbours car if you are never going to look after it, drive it etc etc

You can insurer anyones car if you are going to have to drive it or have agreed to look after it etc.

Of cause individual insurers are entitled to set their own rules and not all insurers will allow you to insure a vehicle that isnt owned by you or your spouse.

If it is just a single days insurance you need then a short term policy is probably the best. Motor insurance can be done on the basis of the vehicle but is most commonly on the basis of a combination of vehicle and drivers.

It is worth checking if the person that will be driving it either has Driving Other Cars on their existing policy in which case they could drive it Third Party Only (ie pay for damage to others but not your fathers car) or could add it to their policy as a Temporary Additional Vehicle. The later will probably be more expensive than a short term policy due to the admin fee they'll probably add but worth a look.

You may be able to add it to your policy on a short term - I once bought a new car before I sold the old one, and they gave me a month's overlap.
