Car Insurance for a car you don't own?

Hi All. Basically my father is no longer able to drive due to a medical condition. He has to surrender his Driving Licence and his Insurance Company are obviously no longer able to cover him.

My brother and I need to sell the car for him, but will need to take the car to a garage who have offered to buy the car.

Obviously I will ring a few companies, but does anyone know how or if I can insure the car for me to drive it to the garage, therefore a short term policy. Also is it me or the car being Insured or both?
Anyone who has any info, I'd be really grateful.

Could you not get the garage to collect the car using their trade plates?

    Thanks.
Unfortunately we've already asked then and as they are one fo these we buy your car type garage, they've already stated that the car would need to be driven to them.

best bet is find a friend who has DOC cover on their policy. If dads insurance has ended then double check the DOC wording because some require the car to have a policy on it

There are many short term insurers about including household names such as Aviva. Just do a search online

I thought you couldnt insure a car that you have no financial interest in.

The way round that I suppose is your father to give you the car, you sell it and just give him the money

Well if they cant help you out why are you giving them your custom. Sell it to someone who is happy to help you out.

Be sure to sort it out quick, if you leave it uninsured you will have to return any tax and sorn the car. As McKneff has said, why are you giving them the business if they wont help you out? the garage have offered to buy the car but after you have paid out on insurance to get it to them they may knock it back or try to bring the price down. If it was me. I would sell it privately.
    Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.
  • If your dad's policy is still in force or would not have yet expired, simply add yourself as a named driver.

Policies end on a death, only the policy holder would be able to change details and obviously cant. If a claim was made it would be voided.
