I didn't get to choose the number of my new car :( was told "oh we can't do that any more"

That's just laziness. It doesn't take much for the dealer's administrator to give the salesman a list of allocated numbers from the list on AFRL. It just means that they have to open the system and go through procedures to open and close it.
The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark

Arnold Clark. Need I say more? :)
  • Ah I see. I just assumed the DVLA allocated the number at the actual time of registration.

    Never bought brand new before.

If you think about it logically, there has to be existing insurance before the car is taxed, so the registration mark must be known first.

Except that it is possible to insure a car using the VIN only. If you build a car yourself you need to be able to insure it to take it for its IVA . You need to pass the IVA before you can register the car.

But you still need insurance with the car's registration mark, in order to register it.

We bought two new cars and chose consecutive numbers from the dealers list of about 20 available. The cars were actually registered three days apart.

I'm pretty sure that insurance with the car's VIN is sufficient for registration purposes.

No it isn't. Registration for these cars have to be done direct with the DVLA (i.e., not on AFRL). They will not accept a vehicle for registration without insurance with the actual registration number on.

Having never done it myself, I'll take your word for it... although it doesn't seem to reflect the procedure kit car builders go through. All the accounts I have read have the builder informing his insurance company of the reg number after registration.
