Registration numbers - weird question

I was having a play around on the DVLA vehicle enquiry website. I've noticed that some vehicles that have a consecutive registration number were registered 3 weeks after the number before, for example. How is that, do the DVLA not issue registration numbers in order?

There isn't just one person doing this job. When does the paperwork get back and signed off and entered into the computer? Where was the car registered? On the forecourt as a pre-reg or later on when sold to a customer?:footie:
Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

I put in my old moped's reg number M994xxx which I got rid of years ago. which was registered on 16-12-94. I put in M995xxx aswell and it is showing as registered on 7-1-95. Same make.
xxx = the same last 3 letters on both.0 -
When my wife bought her previous car the dealer gave her a choice of about ten numbers, so it is possible for the higher numbers to be registered before the lower numbers.0

Same here, with 2 cars I purchased from new the dealer gave us the choice from his list.Gloomendoom wrote: »When my wife bought her previous car the dealer gave her a choice of about ten numbers, so it is possible for the higher numbers to be registered before the lower numbers.0 -
The DVLA supply each new car dealer with a list of Reg Numbers. Most dealers then allow customers to select the one they want, although a few just allocate them in order. I've experienced both."There are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe a 'Princess Coronation' locomotive in full cry. We shall never see their like again". O S Nock0

When I ordered a new car (10 years ago) the salesman gave me the registration number on the day I ordered it and put it on the order form.
The registration date was about 6 weeks later when I collected the car!0 -

Your lucky, I had to wait 3 months from order to delivery, andnow I hear it is 20 weeks, when they called to tell me the reg though, I said I already know what the reg is and told them

I bought a new car once, Never again,
But the dealer offered me a choice of registrations from a list.
So it depends on how many cars they sell and if the next reg in the list is from the same dealer.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

Registration marks are allocated when the order is placed, but the actual registration maybe weeks or months away, but another car may get registered within days, but was ordered after the first one.The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -
I didn't get to choose the number of my new car
was told "oh we can't do that any more" 0
