IMHO he has no claim on the house, his name isn't on the deeds, you weren't married.
At this time I see you are not selling the house, so you're not in a position to honour the 'verbal' agreement you made, not that you have to, that's a matter for your conscious!
However, how much of a nightmare can this man make your life? He already seems to be going down that route by harassing you. Thankfully you have police input. You could also get a court injunction with power of arrest against him to prevent his contact etc.
You could make Social services aware of his windfall of £10,000; but will that improve your situation?
Think you need to decide which will be the better route ...paying him or not? Only you know this man and what he may/may not be capeable of. There are people and services out there to assist you should you stand your ground and stay put.

just had two thoughts re-reading this thread:rolleyes:
by law he is entitled to nothing. no name on the deeds, unmarried, no evidence of any contribution to the running costs etc. he should think himself lucky to get £10,000.
also, if the tables were turned and we had a housing market crash and your house was in negative equity - would he pay his half of the debt if you sold etc? doubt it. worth thinking about.......0 -
