Setting Up Car Boot

Hi

I may be buying some land that is currently someone's back garden. I want to have a car boot there.

How do you go about it. What permits are required? Other advice please.

It depends, on a lot. You need to ask your council or someone in the know locally.

How big are you looking at? What is the parking and access like?

They can have lots of restrictions. Traffic management, Toilets, Insurance.

    Are there other local events?

Starting off will need a lot of advertising. Nothing worse than turning up to find half a dozen stalls and nothing more.

Maybe that suits some people though?

Thanks for the replies. I don't know anyone in the know so I thought I would ask MSEs.

Yes. If you theme it right you may just get away with it.

someone just started a carboot in a field right opposite my parents house, it was there for at least 6/8 weeks before it was stopped. I believe this may have only happened because a neighbour phoned the council EVERYDAY complaining and asking what was going to be done about it. not in my back (front) yard type of thing.

I know of at least a couple of bootsales with no toilets

I just had a google and found this for lambeth council
    http://www.lambeth.gov.uk/NR/rdonlyres/93D29919-0D32-4601-82C8-AEA855352F86/0/CarBootSaleLicenceForm_vApr08.pdf

The law states that a car boot sale may be held on non residential land without specific planning consent for up to 14 days within a calendar year.
Be aware that a Covenant or other Legal Agreement may be attached to the use of land which may restrict such a use. Covenants held over land are civil matters between the relevant parties, and are not controlled by the council.

Traffic and parking can be major issues. But unless it was a huge garden i think
    its a non starter.

Unless the garden was a huge field of course.

No it's not a huge field. Just a normal back garden of house. Can't I theme it "entry only if you come by foot/public transport"?

  • Surely this would then be a yard sale / table top sale, but almost certainly NOT a car boot sale????

Some sort of number/answerphone message to let people know if it's on or not due to weather/other circumstances? You don't want people arriving at 7 am to set up, to find out you've cancelled because the ground is too wet or muddy to be useable.
Cost of extra people to help you run/manage it - security, parking etc.
Cost and logistics of waste management - however much you tell people to take their unsold crap away with them, people always leave stuff behind.
    Public liability insurance.
I know proper car boots can only be a certain number of days a year. That's why our local farmer alternates the fields he uses for it, to get round this. You also can't put any permanent hard standing down.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

How many cars can you fit into this garden? Sellers cars?

From the sound of it i think its going to be too small to call it a carboot. You can make any rules
    you want.
But people will see silly rules and not bother looking.

People are lazy, If they live more than a couple of doors away they will want to drive there.

So decent parking is a must. Complaints from the council or the poice wont go down well.
