Size of wooden battens and costing?

  • I have been thinking about insulating my solid walls to lessen the heat loss and lower my energy bills because of the increasing costs in that area.

Battening is most likely used on the walls themselves because walls are rarely perfectly flat and fixing insulation panels directly to the walls via any method of dot and dab is not likely to fit flat enough. Battens get around that. An air gap should help to lessen any conduction of cold through the wall but it could also cause problems with bacteria build up and fungi/moulds due to the dark airspace and possible condensation formation which is what would worry me.

Therefore, I'm not sure an air gap is a good idea or not. Fixing thermal insulation panels directly to the wall and plasterboard on top might be a better idea, but the wall flatness could be a problem. I have problems with doors which limits the amount of insulation that could be fitted and using battens would make things much worse.

I came across these a few days back which might interest you. They are meant for external use but might be of use although they could be difficult to seal and plaster over without cracking. The pack quantities seem a bit high IMO, screwfix does sell smaller amounts but the range is a bit limited. It might be worth checking out Rawplugs other fixings to see if anything is suitable.

My walls aren't brick, they're concrete so very difficult to fix anything to. Plus possibly the worst for heat loss.

Are you aware of the building regulations in regard to fitting insulation? It's very strict and restrictive unless you ignore it and only plan on reducing your heating bills/maintaining comfort with no benefit when selling.
