What car...?
HI,
I currently have an 07 reg Renault Megane 1.6 and it is AWFUL on petrol!
I have been offered a new job that involves me driving a lot so in the new year I am looking at getting a new car.
Can anybody give me any suggestions on a fairly priced car that is good on petrol etc - I really like VW's but I need advice!
Thanks x

how many miles per year would you be doing as a result in your new job.
a friend of mine has the 1.9 dci 130Bhp version megane 2003-2009, it does really well on MPG because it does have a better gear ratio than other diesel meganes its a 6 speed he averages 44-58 MPG and he's not the slowest of drivers and does approx 18k miles per year.
1.6 meganes are not too bad on MPG for a petrol when was the last time you had it serviced?0 -
It was serviced a few months ago and I don't really want another Megane at all, I want a totally new car and as for the mileage I am unsure but I am going to be a Homecare Assistant so will be travelling a lotThe more one gets to know of men, the more one values dogs.0

diesels are not the best for stop and starting short trips, their fitted with a DPF and if you dont do motorway miles you wont do the burn required to empty the diesel particulate filter (DPF) of unspent soot and fuel this requires a motorwat trip at above 50mph for 15 mins or more.
if you travel around allot all a diesel will give you is a full DPF fault, and an expensive repair bill.
my megane 1.4 is giving me jip im not suprised you want rid of yours.
if you do alot of town driving in stop start conditions a small engined petrol would be your best bet.

We bought a brand new Suzuki Swift this year and are really pleased with it. Does 50 mph round town and more on the motorway if you drive it sensibly (is the 1.2 Petrol engine). They are 11k ish new and we got a 0% finance deal on it.Officially in a clique of idiots0

Have you priced up the extra insurance as well ? you will need to be insured to use the vehicle in connection with your employers businessHi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0

I don't need extra insurance, it will be used for commuting. And insurance on my car now is £44.12 a month.
I am looking at spending about 5K or soThe more one gets to know of men, the more one values dogs.0 -
Skoda Fabia 1.4 Tdi (2006 onwards)
60-65Mpg, low insurance, VW platform but without the badge mark up. Really good little cars.
But "horrible" on fuel, what do you mean? What are you getting from the current car?
And you will indeed need "business class" insurance - communting covers you to travel to-from one place of work. Home care assistant imples that you will be travelling to multiple places throughout your work and in the course of your business. Check with the employer what insurance you will require.0 -

I am not sure exactly on figures but it really is rubbish on petrol, i put £10 in yesterday and drove not very far and my petrol light came on, it is just too expensive for me to run. As for the insurance I will check it out when I get a car to make sure I am covered.
And although I don't want to be picky...I really hate how Skodas look!!!!The more one gets to know of men, the more one values dogs.0
