supermarket v's independant garges fuel

we have 2 independant garages locally ans within a spitting distance to them a huge tesco is opening up on monday with a petrol station, also next spring there will be an Asda opening again with a petrol station right on our door step, and within walking distance of the same garages and the new tescos.
I have heard from other people, that they would much rather pay a bit more and buy the fuel from the smaller garages, as they say its better quality, and they get more miles to the gallon.
one lady said if she goes to the local garage it costs her £15 a day in fuel, but if she goes to tesco the same jouney she has to put in £20 of fuel.
I have my own business, and run 3 vans, I allways try and use the small local independants to buy fuel a few times a week, but we also use supermarket fuel too, if the vans are out and about and need topping up..
Was just wondering what people's thoughts are on this...

Personally I have not noticed any difference in fuel from a supermarket and fuel from other garages.0

No difference IME either in performance or MPG.
Same stuff from the same bunkers made to the same standard for a given specification Diesel/Petrol.
Some of the premium branded stuff may have some additional additives that may improve consumption but driving style will probably make more difference.

Supermarket every time. Even better when its 10p off.0

I live near a refinery and also worked in the refinery for a while. The supermarket, BP, ESSO & independent all come out of the same place - there is no difference between the fuel except the price!0

Actually you have to be aware of how busy the indies are too. Supermarkets shift a lot of fuel and get frequent, fresh deliveries. If your local is older, less busy (and probably dearer) you will have a higher probability of water and other contaminants in the stations tanks.0

A hell of a lot of people on many car forums wouldn`t touch s/market fuel with a barge pole :santa2:0

A hell of a lot of people on many car forums also buy snake oil and go faster stripes and swear by them!0

Never noticed a difference myself. To be honest I wonder if any difference between them is psychological, if you filled most people's cars with mystery A and B fuel I don't think they would be able to identify the supermarket or branded fuel through performance alone.0

As has been said on this forum dozens of times, if there's a difference it's in the additives the individual companies (claim they) put in their fuel. No one has yet provided any reliable evidence that it makes a difference.
That said, what makes you think the supermarkets will necessarily be any cheaper? Most places I drive to and through have Esso, Shell and Jet at least as cheap as Tesco - often cheaper. For reasons best known to itself Texaco is always more expensive at any of its stations in my area.
Given the choice I prefer to patronise the smaller business if the price is the same - and I find it is. It's rarely the case that supermarkets are cheaper and they are destroying choice.0
