Get a fire guard - always place it infront of a lit fire when you are leaving the room empty. Fires are lovely but can spit! so also get a hearth rug too!

& remember to get the chimney swept!

showing my ignorance i know but what is a hearth rug??

    thank you
I need to start saving so I plan to save £2 a week to start with:beer:

I agree with all your points above stoves. Re your point about home insurance, are you supposed to notify them if you have an open fire?

You are yes, depending on your policy of course!. Otherwise any claim might be invalidated in claims of fire, or fire related damage/third party injury etc. Most policies now ask weather you or anyone else in the household is a regular smoker!.

Hearth rug is a cheap wee rug in front of the fire that stops yur carpet being burned in case of sparks :)
  • i make my own firelighters as it saves a fortune on kindling..... i keep all the lint from my tumbledryer, stuff it into cardboard eggboxes, top it up with melted candlewax (from the end of the candles) then leave to harden/cool...... burn brilliantly and works everytime!!!:D:D:D

Wouldn't recommend this as wax will damage your chimney/liner, cause bad tarring & seriously increase the odds of blockages & chimney fires.
Same with plastics & the sugar contained in foods.
