Searches on Credit Report.

How long does it take for searches to appear on Credit Report? I check my credit report weekly and in the last month I applied for a Capital One progress card and the search is yet to appear?

Thank you :)

  • Usually instant, but not always. Have you checked Experian, Equifax & Call Credit.
Can I find out my credit score?
You do not have a single credit score or rating. Different organisations take different information into account when working out your credit score and may have different scores for different products. (Kindly from Experian)
  • No I only subscribe to Equifax. Would it make a difference?

Yes because they may not use equifax.

I hope your not paying these guys a monthly fee, just pay £2.00 to Experian, Equifax & Call Credit and you can get a statutory report there is no real need to view your report each month once or twice a year is fine.

At least if you get accepted with Capital One you will get free monitoring with Equifax through Capital One anyway.

  • Oh yeah I pay every month I have for years. Its the best way to keep my credit file nice and clean and to prevent Fraud. Its only £7.

If I sign up to experian would I see different searches recorded?

I actually already have a Capital One card but I never look at benefits.

That monitoring is really useful. As a guide, my Egg card has been changed to Barclaycard about a month ago, and it is yet to appear on my report.

So your paying £84 per year at the moment then, and I'm getting it for pence compared..

Potentially yes you need to check all three as all three are used in the industry and contain different information. It you sign up to them that'll be another £263 per year ontop

From capital one website which is free

Capital One World MasterCard® customers, and any Capital One customers who opened their account before July 2011 benefit from our free Identity Alert Service, powered by Equifax. This acts like an early warning system to help keep you protected. You'll be alerted by email within seven days if someone applies for credit using your name, or if key changes are made to your Equifax credit file with or without your consent.

When I was stoozing heavily I ordered perhaps 2 or 3 statutory reports a year from both Experian and Equifax, paying £2 each so up to £12 a year.

You may not know this but a statutory report from those companies is valid for queries on existing accounts for 90 days, meaning no more than 4 per year are required from each of the main two CRAs...max cost = £16 per annum.

Granted you won't find out about any new accounts established and/or searches made for 90 days, but £84 a year (or £168 for two CRAs) is simply unnecessary in my opinion.

You mention fraud. In my 35+ years of banking, and the last 10-12 years or so of it online, I've never been a victim of fraud...and I refuse to let them (insurance companies, banks, CRAs, and card providers, etc) worry me into parting with money for nothing!

How is it useful? Have you benefited in some way from knowing that?

I have paid for years its not a problem as its only £7 per month I have never missed it :).

I will sign up to Experian then and see if they hold different information and I will check Capital One in regards to this free Identity Alert Service.

Thank you for your informed responses, :D
