They not have meant to, but they were both negligent and reckless. It was the generations before me who caused these problems, despite all the things you've listed. But I don't think they meant to.
You don't exactly have to be the greatest brain in the world to foresee problems with millions of tons of non-degradeable waste plastic."Never underestimate the mindless force of a government bureaucracyseeking to expand its power, dominion and budget"Jay Stanley, American Civil Liberties Union.0 -

Maybe not, but hindsight is 20/20. When you have the opportunity to improve your children's lives - and save yourself time and money, too! - not many will think about the possible effect on their grandchildren, or their children, or theirs. Every year there is more and more knowledge available to us all, and sometimes the accepted "right thing to do" is different one year after the other. It's normal. It's progress. But we are still human.
Look at India and China, repeating the mistakes of the western world: burning through fossil fuels for electricity, over-reliance on cars. From here, it looks like the reckless destruction of the earth - and, objectively, it is. But for each individual family, it's the glorious future.
Each of us has only the power to change their own behaviour. The best we can hope for is to serve as a positive example to those around us. Pointing fingers at certain generations or classes or countries serves no-one. None of us is perfect.0 -
back when I was a child, women had 'shopping bags' or 'baskets'. The bags were invariably tartan canvas with leather handles and the baskets were wicker (I loved those baskets and actually made one at school).
purchases were rarely packaged and if they were, it was in paper either bags or loose sheets.
now how green were we again?0 -

In Wales now we're all carrying 'shoppers' again as it's 5p for ANY bag (inc paper) in a shop.
It's not just in food shops, it is every shop - even clothes, including underwear - so when I paid for my new coat in October I carried it out of the shop over my arm. Store security guards are getting fed up of 'green' customers

lol Luxor - I AM in Wales! and right now have THREE foldup shopping bags in my handbag! Have had these for a few years now and only rarely need to shell out 5p for a carrier bag! I totally agree with these charges - just a drive down the side of the river Rhym after a windy/wet period and the trees are decorated with the dam things for miles!0

 Meritaten.....and only rarely need to shell out 5p for a carrier bag!
I'm glad to say I've managed to remember my bags every time - my memory is always sharpened by the thought of 'wasting' 5p.
Happy memories of the clan gatherings of tartan bags in the local shop when I was small. As you say, everybody's mum and granny had one. My 40 something year old 'cookery' wicker basket is upstairs somewhere, I'll dust it off to bring home the veg

:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:too right! and they packed a mean punch when they were full too!
sadly, among the purple rinse set, they have been superceded by the ankle breaking 'trolleys'. (it always amazes me how these little old dears manage to haul them UP the steps of the buses with no trouble whatsoever!)
I see you live in Abertawe (I know the secret code - you just put the name in in Welsh to confuse the Sais! didnt ya?)0 -

but people will still throw them away because "it's only 5p". I disagree with the charges because I'm not spending 50p on carrier bags every time I go shopping. I'll order online instead and let them deliver.0 -
Maybe the cashier just needed a good hard slap.NO FARMS = NO FOOD0

you have TEN carrier bags of shopping??????????? order online hun!
people think the Scots are mean - they should come to Wales! I HAVE noticed that hardly anyone asks for carrier bags these days! and I have already noticed that less of the dam things are blowing around on windy days!
I think the charge is a good thing! and most people here agree too!
for my main shop I have four of the black, tough, Aldi shopper bags. They are huge and last for ages!
any carrier bags I DO have to buy get reused as many times as I can!0
