Please help. Mouse pointer keeps freezing

For the last few days the mouse pointer on my laptop keeps freezing for a few minutes every few minutes. I have no idea why this keeps happening, but its driving me mad.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

The most likely reason is probably that something is using 100% CPU and there is no processing power left to update the pointer position.

You should be able to tell by looking at the CPU usage (where you look for this depends on which version of Windows you have).

If that's the case, there are several possible causes - the most likely being malware, and the next being a driver problem somewhere on the system.

Thank you for your reply. I will run Malwarbytes and see if that does the trick.

I have had a similar problem from time to time with my laser mouse which either freezes periodically or becomes uncontrollable.

The most obvious thing to check first of all is the battery. Secondly, check for an accumulation of dust around the optical/laser lens - if you blow quickly and sharply into the the lens channel this usually clears it.

I haven't used a wired mouse for years but if they still use the rubber ball type arrangement take this out of its housing and give it a good wash in soapy water, dry it and re-install.

Hi, I have run Malwarebytes and found Trojan Dropper, I have deleted this and restartarted my laptop and the problem still exists.

I have also tried it whilst unplugging the battery and the problem still exists.

    Any more ideas?

    Thank you.

What version of Windows are you using? XP/Vista/7?

Could well be something using alot of the CPU.

I would run a defrag + a chkdsk to check for drive errors, once I know what version of Windows your on, i can give you steps to carry out a chkdsk.

  • Hey Fifi35, you should try and run a chkdsk, basically follow the steps shown in this YouTube Video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9qFQ4fwa5k

When you've done that, reboot your computer and you should get a black screen with its check disk status, this will fix any file system errors that could be causing some problems, in alot of cases, it can fix the weirdest of problems, such as your mouse issue!
