"Exact" bank account name for paypal withdrawals?

Hi, I've just started to sell a few things on eBay and would like to withdraw the funds gained from my paypal account to by bank account. When I try to add my bank account to paypal I am told I need to enter my 'exact bank account name', otherwise the transfer will fail and I will be charged a £14 return fee.

Having checked my check book, statement, online, cashcard etc, I seem to have several different versions of my name linked to my account e.g:
firstname lastname
firstname middlename lastname
first_initials lastname
'mr' first_initials lastname
Hence I have no idea what the 'exact' name is for my account!

I really don't even know why this is necessary as surely account number and sort code should be enough but has anyone had a problem with this and been charged the £14?

As can be seen, it doesn’t really matter. The definitive name should be the one on your paper statements. Some institutions give you quite a lot of latitude to vary forenames on your bank cards. It’s not like paying for something with a card. It’s using BACS. You only need the sort code and account number to transfer money between accounts. The name of the account holder is used to check that things are correct. You can transfer money into and out of accounts that have no bank card associated with them. I wouldn’t even bother with the “Mr”. That’s your title.

Your full account name is shown on bank statements. A shortened form of your account name often appears on cards due to space constraints. UK banks are actually quite forgiving on correctly matching forenames for transfers as long as the surname matches exactly.

The most important point is to enter the correct sort code and account number. Otherwise your transfer will be rejected.

  • For some reason, Paypal had my bank account name as my eBay user name and wouldn't let me change it. Withdrawals have worked perfectly for the last 5 years! I think as long as you get the sort code and account number right, it doesn't really matter.
