Cripes! So much for a caring society here on MSE!! Thanks Xoleeb and Slyracoon for your positive contributions!

FYI, I own it from a finance point of view as I have paid back 3/4. Who on here (who in the world?) pays for a car outright?? We all get finance, and if you don't, then why are you on here?

I had the choice of a loan, or of HP when I bought the car. The HP was cheaper all round, better APR, better length of term, and smaller repayments, all in all saving me over £600 interest over 4 years, that's why I took it (plus I can hand it back after 1/2 payments should I ever run into financial difficulty, which I never have and never intend to as I manage my money very carefully).

So what if I don't OWN the car; I come into a small windfall and treat myself to something, I'll bloody well spend it on what I want to. As a point of comparison, I changed address recently too, they didn't charge me £25 to update my address! The computer operative had to type in at least all of 40 characters more to do that. They shouldn't charge for one amendment, and not another.

Anyway, rant over, but if you don't have anything constructive to say, then just don't bother....check out the forum etiquette! If I disagree with something someone posts on here, I just don't reply. Please extend the same courtesy.

    No we don't.;)

Because its more money saving to actually save up for something and pay for it cash rather than pay large amounts of interest to buy a depreciating asset.

You've been on here since 2008 surely you knew what to expect. ANY thread attracts both useful advice and vitriol in equal measure. Particularly in motoring.

I have only had a loan on one car in my many many years of motoring and later thought thats a lot
of money to spend on a car.

Never again.. £2k..ish is plenty for a good reliable car.

So in the websites main focus, Dont get a private plate, See we saved you at least £105.

£25 admin charge is not excessive, Check other posts.

To amend a reg number on a finance agreement? I think it is. When I changed my car in January, Aviva charged me £15 to add a newer more expensive car to the policy for the remaining 10 months of the policy. When my wife bought a second motorcycle in March 2010 she was charged just over £10 by Ebike to add the bike to her existing policy for the final 4 1/2 monthe remaining on the policy. The charges of both companies were very reasonable indeed.

Santander would charge me £30 to change registration number!

It's THEIR car, not mine, so why not? (and it's not mine until every single penny is paid, regardless of the rule of thirds)

Then my insurance company would charge me ~£18.

I informed my insurance company, no charge.
Did you advise the insurance company that you wish to retain the plate in the event of a total loss claim (write off)?

Private plates are seen as a luxury*. Compared to the admin charges that the DVLA charge for putting them on your car, £25 is quite cheap!

Since they're a luxury I'm sure your HP company isn't going to want to do it for free, sure it's a nice little earner for them but they can get away with it. Some insurance companies, such as Kwik Fit, also charge a £25 admin fee.

Nothing you can do about it.

As for "we all buy cars on finance". You'll probably find that a lot of people here run older cars that they paid cash for. My current one is 18 years old, immaculate, and cost me 4 grand back in 2008. Previous cars I've bought all cost me less than a grand, most of them less than £500.

    * I have previously had a private plate as a money saving measure. I was using my own car for work and my employer were getting funny about me representing the company in a V reg car in 2006, however they accepted that the car was still in bloody good condition, so a private plate to disguise it's age satisfied them and I got another two years out of that car, until it got written off in an accident.

Care to elaborate 5t? I'm not quite sure what you're talking about here but it sounds intriguing! :)

Basically - new style plates on a bike:

    AB52
    XYZ

Old style plate but only two digits:

    A12
    XYZ

It lines up a lot neater. I had an old H plate car (the plate means nothing to me) and transfered it across so the stripe for the EU plates could go all the way up the left side of the plate.

With the newer style "top heavy" plates, it all gets squashed into the bottom left corner.

    does that help?

    5t.
What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?
