I like nice plump pillows, but all mine seem to have gone terribly flat. I really don't want to just throw them away and replace with new because I worry about how much space they'll take up in landfill (as well as cost). It's occurred to me that maybe I could open them up and add more filling or something - got so many pillows I could just combine! Has anyone else tried doing this - does it work or will I just end up with lumpy, unusable pillows?
I'm allergic to feathers, so I'm talking about polyester type pillows here. Or even does anyone ahve any tips for stopping them flattening so much in the first place?

I wash my old pillows & use them as toy stuffing. When I still need them as pillows & just put 2 pillows to a pillow case.

I wash mine and then deliberately dry them in the tumble drier. They plump back up nicely - and I have both types of pillow, you know - feathers and some other "stuff"
I do them two at a time - and plump them two or three times during the drying.Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. Also make sure you plump them in the morning when you get out of bed. Seems silly to say it but I have had this convasation recently with a group of around a dozen Mums and not one of them plumped their pillows in the morning.
I also wash mine once every few months. I have a rolling program of washing the pillows in the house our pillows, the littlies pillows and then my eldest's pillows.
Never thought about using the stuffing for crafting, good thinking BatmanBSCno.87The only stupid question is an unasked oneLoving life as a Kernow Hippy0 -
Do you not find that washing even the washable/tumble dryable pillows makes the fibres clump together really badly when you tumble dry them? Or is that just me?0

NopeAs I said - a good bit of plumping two or three times during drying takes care of that. Maybe you aren't trying hard enough

tumble drying with tennis balls apparently...People seem not to see that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character.

I don't have any good ideas for refreshing them but I get this problem too. I used to have cheap pillows that felt like chunks of foam which lasted ages, but bought some posh ones in a sale and they have all balled up after six months and are only good on top of memory foam pillows.Living cheap in central London :rotfl:0

Haha! I don't plump I must admit. I'll have to give that a go. I don't like flat pillows and have been using three at a time lately as they're so flat! I will be using my balled up stuffing for the Christmas sock monkeys though. And plumping my pillows when I get the next set!0
