sky HD box-can i have a split feed?

I live in a block and have a communal satelite dish.....I want sky in the bedroom but sky say the managing agent will charge me approx £150 for the additional install then £10 per month for multiroom!This seems quite expensive! but if i have to i will, however, someone suggested the following:

to put a "split feed" (cost £25) on to the main box (in the living room), run cabling into the bedroom into the 2nd spare sky box i have, is this true? will i still have to pay for multi room subscription?

Short answer: you cannot split satellite feeds.

Slightly longer answer: the box talks back to the lnb (or multiswitch in your case) switching it between modes, so if the cable is split the boxes will either fight for control of the switch, send spurious voltages back up the line, or if you put a DC block on the second box feed then the second box will only receive the channels from the mode the first box has selected.

£150 sounds OK but neither the sky rep you spoke to nor I has any knowledge of your installation and whether there is spare capacity built in.

The second box needs a card to get your full package, that will need to be paid for monthly as mutliroom sub.

A cheap and cheerful solution would be a TV- Link.
You'll be able to view Sky in your bedroom and control all the normal functions, the limitation being both TVs will receive the same channel, mono sound and no HD.

Quite so.

You can't split a dish feed but you can, however, split the HDMI output of a Sky or Freesat box.

To solve the problem to which "penryn" refers, we purchased an HDMI splitter box such as this and ran a 15 metre HDMI lead to the kitchen, for the television there.

The splitter box (in our lounge) accepts the HDMI output of up to four different sources (e.g. a Sky+HD box, a Freeview HD box, a FreeSat HD box and a Blu-ray player) and it outputs two HDMI television feeds in 1,080p HD, with 5.1 audio.

Plug both televisions into it, one in the lounge, one in the kitchen (or a bedroom) and each of them can display a different HD source, independently.

Works marvellously well.

Ignoring the hassle of tacking a length of coaxial cable along skirting boards and into the bedroom?

You can get ultra-thin WF65-1 cable that makes this a little easier but Chanz4's suggestion of a wireless videosender would be easier - if it works through the wall(s).
