courtesy car trap

Hi I had a accident last week driving down a road at night and a cow stepped out in front and I hit the cow writing off my car. Ok now the problem is that when I spoke to my insurance company they would not give me a courtesy car even thou it says courtesy vehicle on the policy. The small print says a courtesy car only available while car is in for repair only when I rang they then said it means repair not wright off.
I booked it through car super market that says courtesy car available within 24hrs.
Does anyone know if I have any writes or can I claim for my own hire charges. I'm with the Co-op insurance

  • Sorry to say this but, unfortunately, most insurance policies that include a courtsey car, only provide one when the car is being repaired. This is because the repairing garage provides the car through an agreement with the insurer. You can customise your policy to include the provision of a courtesy car in the event of a total loss, but this is generally an additional feature, and therefore an additional cost.

    Was the cow ok?
You had me at your proper use of "you're".

I have just renewed insurance and on the phone they made this quite clear, repair = courtesy car, write off does not unless you pay an additional premium, which I did. I expect it is in the small print, my insurer is Admiral.
  • When I took out the insurance I didnt think about checking the small print you just presume that you get a courtesy car when it says courtesy car, but then you only realise how good a insurance company is when you claim

The cow is dead the police woman had to report it as a fatality

Obviously the cow should have mooo ved faster, sorry!

Can't you claim on the farmer as the cow shouldn't have been wandering?
  • well I spoke to the farmer who said it they were allowed to roam on common land but it was on a road, my insurance company think that I dont have much of a case but the solicitors are looking into it. The farmer has public liability

...and if you had been moo ving slower you may have been able to stop in time :D.

I think most, if not all, policies don't cover you for a hire car once your car is written off.

Hope this wasn't in the New Forest? Poor old cow!

Err, the question..... I really don't know, but wouldn't have thought the policy could apply to a write off. After all, a repair is time limited, a write-off is a forever situation.

If cows have escaped, the farmer will have a strict liability under the Animals Act.

Even if you pay extra for a courtesy car in the event of a write off or you are offered one by the other party's insurance company due to them writing off your car, you only get the car for 14 days.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p
