totally random panic

As I mentioned on another thread, I booked a BA/American Airlines codeshare flight yesterday.

Anyway, tonight I hazve noticed that the available balance, my recent transactions and my outstanding balance on my credit card don't add up to my limit. I have got into a huge panic that my card has been cloned (Last time this happened, it happened just after booking a holiday, which is part of why I am panicking)

I have rung Amex and they were really helpfull - went through all the approved but not yet on my bill transactions - agreed with me that they didn't add up, but suggested why this might be (due to some extra payments I made). they also checked that none of the unprocessed transactions were suspect (none were) - but said to wait 2 days for all outstanding balances to pass through, and put a marker on my file so if there IS fraud, it is logged that I was concerned at an early stage. So, I'm happy

however, I am now in a panic, that if the card HAS been cloned, and therefore needs to be blocked and a new card issued, will it be a problem when I do my check in. the E-Ticket says I need to card I used to pay for the booking with. This once happened to me with a train ticket, and was a nightmare to resolve!

This is just a random panicked message, anyone who can set my mind at rest will be given massive thanks!

    Dont worry.

Wait til the transactions show up first. Then you can decide what to do.

If it is fraud and they send you a new card, dont panic. Jsut ring AA and tell them you have a new card.

Also I have flown with them countless times and not once have they asked me to show the card. Just have your replacement one ready. Im sure people have new cards all the time anyway due to old ones expiring.
  • I thought as much - but, after my trainline experience, I am a little bit paranoid. it took 4 visits to the train station, and 5 calls to a premium rate call-centre to resolve, and then it was only resolved when the station manager at preston over-ruled thetrainline still saying on the computer that I couldn't be issued my train ticket!

If flying american airlines i'd be more concerned about them filing for bankruptcy

Not really...not likely to have any actual impact...most major US airlines have gone into and many have come out of Chapter 11.

OP - I wouldn't worry about the credit card at check-in thing...we've also never been asked for it on any airline and have flown AA many times. I would probably also be in a panic as it is just my way, but I don't think you will have to worry.
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?
  • I actually KNOW there is nothing to worry about, but I have just worked myself into a state. something tells me that BA (who I booked through) and AA, and Amex come to think of it, are a more professional outfit than The Trainline and LLoyds TSB were last time!

But you will still have the card in your possession won't you? So in the unlikely event of you being asked for it you can show it.
  • just a quick thanks - was all sorted this morning, panic averted. but without that bit of gentle reassurance, I think I would have had a mini-breakdown

Don't really understand much about the financial workings of North American airlines in general and what Chapter 11 means in particular -do you !

AA going Chapter 11 is going to have no impact on people's travel plans in the short to medium term whatsoever so why on earth are you trying to scaremonger ?

Oh and AA have NEVER asked me for my card at check in ...or BA for that matter :)

When I recently booked a flight that required the card at checkin, the website specifically said "if the card has since expired, bring it anyway, for ID purposes".
