No signal with satelite dish

Moved into a property where a satelite dish is installed.I've tried plugging into the ariel socket and all I get is something like no signal. What are my options?
Are these them and are there any more?
Join sky get their box and subscription
Freesat box
Buy a new ariel

Do I definately need a satelite reciever in order to view TV?

  • Doesn't the house have an aerial? If not, then yes, you'll need one of those put up plus a Freeview box.

The dish will only work with a box which works with a dish, so a Freesat box or Sky box. So if you want Freeview and the HD services then you'll need a Freesat box. Presumably cheaper than an aerial and a Freeview box (no HD)

That makes an assumption that the dish you have will work with a Freesat box. I don't know whether a Sky dish works with a Freesat box, my guess is that it doesn't because it points at a different satellite, in which case it would only work with a Sky box and vice versa (it's not really the dish, it's where it's pointing) - perhaps someone else can confirm that

OP, are you sure the feed marked Aerial that you plugged the Sky box into was for the Satellite?..Where is the dish & can you see any cable running from it,if you can, visually trace it back to the entry point. If the place has been renovated, chances are the Sky cabling has been cut off by the renovators..

There are two black cables that have been cut inside the property. The previous took the satelite reciever from what I know.I'll have a check again tonight and also have a look for an ariel.

Freesat works with the same dish and the same alignment. Swapping from one to another is just a straight box swap.

He would not need to cut the cable to take the box (which would be his property anyway). He would just need to unplug it. You'll need to fit new 'F' connectors and buy a Freesat box or PVR-that's all you need to get Freesat.

Sky and Freesat will work off the same dish.
Have you taken the cable from the dish, put a coax connector on it and plugged it into a TV? If so, it won't work - satellite connectors are different to TV antenna connectors, but it could just be that the old connectors were cut off the leads from the dish.

You'll need an antenna and associated cable to receive Freeview.

I just plugged it into a coax socket on the wall, hoping it would just provide me with analogue/digital tv.I'll have a look tonight was in a bit of rush when doing it the other night.

Only if there is an aerial connected to that socket.

Sounds like a feed for the Sky+

Couldv'e been the previous owner, his wife or the movers that cut it or just simply pulled the F's off. Some of the older batches of screw on F's are a !!!!!! to get off, especially in the confines of a TV cabinet, which is why the may have been cut.
