Hi all,

I am due to go to Jersey for work next week.

I have a contract with T-Mobile and wondered if I will incur roaming charges for calls and 3G internet access. Can anyone enlighten me?

Thanks :money:

Yes, you will be roaming outside the UK on a non-UK network. It is irrelevant that the Channel Islands are British and use area codes within the 44 country code.

As the Channel Islands are outside the EU, the EU roaming regulation does not apply, but I believe that all UK networks treat roaming in the Channel Islands as if the regulation does apply.

Make sure you cancel voicemail, we just returned to find Voicemail had charged us £3 someone left a message. Even though we didn't pick up a single call whilst abroad.

Voicemail picking up the call was classed as use and charged at £1.50, then delivering the message was another £1.50.

Was that in the Channel Islands or somewhere where the EU roaming regulations apply (i.e. the EEA)? If not, I don't think your experience is relevant, because the EU roaming regulations prohibit this.

It was outside of Europe, the advisor at T-Mobile said to cancel Voicemail whenever we travel in future to avoid similar charges. I've not read your link as my lunch is ending but I assumed in the EU the charges would apply but probably be lower.

No, you can't be charged for incoming voicemails under the EU roaming regulations at all. This has been the case since 1st July 2010. Strictly speaking the regulations don't apply in the Channel Islands, Isle of Man or Switzerland, but UK operators apply them anyway for roaming in these jurisdictions because it would seem very odd if it cost more to roam in Jersey for example than it does in French Guyana.

You will incur charges for receiving calls, so whether this is an actual connected call or a voicemail you've received you'll be charged for it.

Incorrect. Please don't post false information when I have already explained this correctly and provided a link. Where the EU roaming regulations are applied, you are not charged for receiving voicemails, i.e. where the call is routed to the roamed network and then back to the UK. This double-charging has been banned by the EU since 1st July 2010 and the cost to the consumer is now zero.

I did not know that about voicemail- I have turned mine off anyway (and haven't been able to turn it back on-doh!)

I did find out that from Jersey it actually costs more to text/ call the UK than any other EU country- go figure!
