Can get a divx player for <£30 without too much trouble.

No, but then the OP never said they wanted to...

    Again, was never brought up...

And the same is true of the divx route if you want to use the save dvd-rw over and over again.

The OP *did* however say "Can I just plonk the mpgs onto the dvd like " which gives the impression that spending (edit: more) time prattling around with software to convert things back and fourth isn't really what they had in mind.

The divx method would be drag and drop.

Oh here we go again

£30 DivX players are cheap and nasty, end of.

I dont care what the OP did or didnt bring up I just gave more info so what?

And its not pratting around with software its tweaking but as seen as you dont have the software mentioned why are you arguing the toss?

And you only get what you pay for, WOW to have crappy software :p

Open source is usually a bit clunky and wont do what you want it to do. :)

Oh dear. I would give a detailed reply to this post, however my 'clunky' and 'crappy' firefox browser might not let me do what I want to do, so I wont bother!

I know my original post was a little flippant and I am not trying to start a big fight here FYI.

I know Firefox is an OK Browser but so are many browsers, all im saying is dont expect the best from free programs, I spent hours and I mean hours trawling through various articles and downloading lots of freeware via afterdawn and after lots of usage and then uninstalling it dawned on me to buy the VSO software as it really really is a brilliant piece of software and should be considered by anyone who wants to burn a DVD.

https://www.afterdawn.com is a great site, but at it's best when you look through the forums , rather than at the ads.

At the end of the day, most conversion problems can be solved via real freeware - of which there is less than you might think. Other "paid-for" solutions are often less user helpful, and often out-of-date junk. Beware especially the so-called "review" sites that give max marks to rubbish - the whole thing is a scam.

Don't overlook existing software that came with your machine - you'd be surprised at some of it's less known features.

For what it's worth, I've found the following reliable:

PSP Video 9 - freeware, that does the obvious.
Vso-software - that solves a myriad of conversions (has to be paid for)
Uleadvideo studio - often comes supplied, and allows creation of DVDs from multiple sources.
DVDShrink - freeware to copy a DVD
https://www.slysoft.com - a suite of software to copy/convert music/DVD to other devices or media - again, has to be paid for, but has always worked for me, and has a technical services dept that love a challenge.

Thanks guys - all I literally want to do is to put as many 700mb AVI movies onto a DVD as possible so I can watch them in my standalong player - I'm tearing my hair out trying to understand how to do it..
I've downloaded the VSO software and added 2 avi files to it, and it came to about 4.3gb? What's that all about?
Do I need to convert it to svcd first?

If i wanted to use svcd2dvd, would it be able to fit on all these files (say 5 700mb mpg files) onto 1 dvd-r?

I also have Nero Premium 7 but it's confusing me to be honest - a little embarrassing considering I built the computer I'm typing this on yet can't figure out the whole DVD writing/authoring palaver :/

with nero premium 7 you get Nero vision 4 (i think) that should be able to convert vcd to DVD.

Ask (or look) for help here www.videohelp.com

try dragging a couple of mpg file (look for avseq001.dat, must copy it to your hard disk and rename the extension to a .mpg) on to a dvd without converting them.
My £17 dvd is happy playing them you get a menu showing the files and you just select the movie file you want.

worth a go for the sake of a dvd that can cost less than 10p.

When using the VSO software you will have to change a few settings, Settings, Encoding and drop to medium quality and DVD5 TV format to PAL europe and then Burn speed to x1 and also dont add original files to DVD if possible, this will then be the same as a rental DVD quality (very good) and it will produce VOB and TOS files that will be burned onto a DVD as long as you have a DVD burner, dont forget to defrag your PC before using this or any DVD software as it produces no skips or errors I use http://www.auslogics.com/disk-defrag/index.php which is free so I defrag the PC then I use the software and just leave it run.
