MPG onto a DVD - will it work?

I've been converting various avi files into mpg format (vcd) to burn onto a cd-r, to view on my standalone DVD player. I've just acquired a dvd-rewriter and some blank DVD-rs..

Can I just plonk the mpgs onto the dvd like I did with the cds (to view on dvd player)or is there a special conversion I need to do?

Thanks!

best tip: buy a divx player - plays just about eveything without u having to convert to mpg or dvd etc - u can get one for under £30 these days - i would be soooooooo lost without mine!!

so if u have an avi file u can just make a data dvd and plonk it in your divx player - sorted!

if u want to watch a file on your normal dvd player, you can convert from avi to dvd with various programs (some u can get free online - just google avi to dvd). if u've already converted avi to mpg and then u want to convert to dvd, you'll lose some picture quality - i recommend u always convert the original file to dvd.

    good luck!

    Hi slinks,
The main reasoning behind me wanting to do this is to fit many 700mb mpg files onto one DVD. At present we can't afford a divx player..

Yeah, DVD can contain MPEG1 (more usually MPEG2 though). Just use your DVD authoring software, but dont simply burn the MPGs as data, that wont work

I bought this and I must say is very good indeed and a lot cheaper than a new player.

Not so sure about that. Fairly sure that you'll use more discs going that way than the divx way? - and cheap as divx players are these days it won't take long to make up the difference?

Lol, software versus a palyer, software is £24.00 I know I have it and how much is a player? about £60 for a decent player, and with the software it converts far more file types than most players can play and you can also set the quality of frames and sound and titles and also put in the chapters, language TV Format and subtitles, can a Div X player do that, oh yes and after conversion it will aoutomatically burn a disc thats playable in any and I do mean any DVD Player so friends dont have to have a Divx player also to watch films.

:) Oh yeah and Only one DVD-RW is needed as it also burns time and time again and the output is standard DVD format so will then again play in any player they say about 1000 burns on a DVD-RW before it diminishes,

And you only get what you pay for, WOW to have crappy software :p

Open source is usually a bit clunky and wont do what you want it to do. :)

Can get a divx player for <£30 without too much trouble.

No, but then the OP never said they wanted to...

    Again, was never brought up...

And the same is true of the divx route if you want to use the save dvd-rw over and over again.

The OP *did* however say "Can I just plonk the mpgs onto the dvd like " which gives the impression that spending (edit: more) time prattling around with software to convert things back and fourth isn't really what they had in mind.

The divx method would be drag and drop.
  • i use this great little tool best tenner ive spent.
takes about 30 minutes for 5 700meg mpegs plus menus
