Claiming back credit charges....confused

I took out a credit card with Capital One in November 1999. I believe that this was mis-sold. I didn't even realise that I had the ppi when I was having treatment for cancer, and called them to say that I was late in paying as I was ill. They did not inform me that I had the ppi.
I would like to try and reclaim my charges, but do not have any statements. Should I write to them, and request all my statements, or just write requesting any charges back.
