Fibre? It's all smoke and mirrors - you'll be using the same copper connection you always have. If you don't get fibre, ask for a refund!
  • Well some of us are still waiting for ADSL2+ upgrade from ADSLmax let alone any sign of fibre(FTTC). There are some places in my exchange area that cannot even get broadband as they are too far from the exchange - which is not in the centre of its service area. This is 10 miles from a city centre as well not some rural outpost.

Does anyone else apart from me see an irony in all those with fast broadband connections wanting it to be even faster while at the same time complaining about the bankers on huge bonuses wanting even bigger bonuses......

Basically, fibre comes into the village exchange and then to my house via the old copper wires. 20mbps in the box, 15 into my house i've been told!

Better than the 2.5 I get at the moment

Great you'll be able to hit your 40gb limit in record time, broadband in the village no 6 will be pleased.
That gum you like is coming back in style.
  • Well if it is indeed fibre....and I'm assuming Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC)
The fibre comes up from the exchange to your local green street cabinet.
A new FTTC cabinet is located alongside the existing one with interconnecting tie lines between the two.
The new Cabinet also requires a power supply running 24/7.

The current speeds are 40Mbps at the Street Cabinet
BT are in a trial at the moment to upgrade that to 80Mbps at the Street Cabinet.

From the street cabinet to your house uses the existing phone lines.

The fall off in speed as you get further away from the cabinet is much faster than under conventional ADSL from the exchange as much higher frequencies are used. There are no definitive speed vs distance graphs available as the concept is too new - only laboratory ones in "simulated real life conditions".

It is Fibre to Cabinet. It comes tomorrow morning - or the engineer does anyway that will install it!
